No its not April Fools' Day!

In this story reported in the UK press Calais has stated that it wants to be considered a part of England:
Calais wants to be 'part of England' for Olympics | UK news | guardian.co.uk

Now of course Calais was once a part of England, but in 1558 the city was invaded by the French, and it has been French ever since. Even in view of the length of European memories, half a millenium is quite a long time, and in England we have just about got around to accepting that Calais is part of France.

The thrust of the article is that Calais is only 90 minutes by train from London's Olympic station at Stratford - and there are parts of London more than 90 minutes from Stratford. Calais hopes to cash in on the London Olympics. But the spirit of Calais' statement draws attention to the number of Brits who live in Calais or visit Calais. Calais is quite literally within the London commuter belt. The "booze cruise" from Dover to Calais is a British institution - basically take a cheap day return for anything from £1 up and stock up on cheap booze. Calais is definitely being anglicised.

If the article is to be believed right now the Union Jack flies over Calais. :biggrin1:

Ever been there? What a dump. I bet the French would be glad to give it back.

Henry VIII would be so proud. His Pyrrhic victory would finally be consummated.

Got stuck in Calais for three days with a bad cold that prevented me from continuing on to England. It was both a good and a bad thing. I agree, the place was/is a hole.

If the Calais boosters succeed, the auto junkyards around the USA could round up all the old Cadillacs with the Calais model nameplates and send them overseas to be used as the "official car of the Olympics." Anyone remember those old clunkers? They looked like Cadillacs but were stripped down with no options except power steering and air conditioning. Of course, that was before the Japanese taught the world how to make quality automobiles. Still, those countries supposedly signed up to train in Calais could squire their entire teams around in those old boats.

Northern France, in particular Picardy, is not at all nice. Very depressing. Yes, Calais is really nasty.

I don't like Dover, England, either.

Last visit to UK capital confirmed it is no longer English, it is just a very large alien camp as they have at Calais, which by the way has always been French. English kings held it as a fief of their French dukedom. If the Olympics have to be held in Britain then all the events would have to be built in at least South Yorkshire. But maybe the fat arsed politicians who direct the London assembly will at least clean the streets (do Brits have to continually hawk out highly infectious phlegm at every opportunity?) for the few weeks it is home to the media auxiliaries.

i think you are being a tad unfair. i think the olympics are a great thing to have here and i hope they do not come political as some are trying to do. yes a simple thing to do would be to keep the streets clean. a simple thing that can make a good impression. i really hope the london olympics does well. and ps london is capitol of england as edinburgh scotland as cardiff wales.
