California Cracks Down ... On Bake Sales, CBS Evening News: State Prohibits Tasty Tradition To Combat Childhood Obesity Epidemic - CBS News

CBS) In California it's still legal to sell cupcakes, cookies and brownies in a bakery ... but not at a school bake sale.

That fundraising slice of Americana - loaded with sugar and fat - has been banned in California schools by government order, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone.

At Piedmont High School, principal Randall Booker has enforced a zero tolerance policy for what used to be a campus tradition.

"I love the bake sales," he said. "I eat them myself. But there are state laws that we just have to abide by."

To combat the epidemic of childhood obesity, new state nutrition guidelines strictly limit the fat, sugar and total calories of any food sold on campus during school days - even before and after school.

At Montclair Elementary, the hall is lined with photos of the annual fundraiser, where eating has always played a central role.

"Food sales are a big part of our community," said Wendy Morrison, the mother of a fifth-grader. "They're more than just the selling of food. It's community coming together."

Morrison mourns the loss.

"It was actually a beloved tradition at the school."

California's effort to get fat and sugar out of school foods goes far beyond the disappearing bake sale tables. School lunches no longer consist of hot dogs, french fries and nachos. Choices now include spinach salad, healthy burritos and grilled chicken.

Principal Booker also says Piedmont High no longer sells soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi.

And the kids miss the junk food.

"Oh, I used to have nachos and sour cream and chili like everyday. They don't sell that any more. But now I have to settle for, like, this whatever," said one student.

Bake sales may once have dominated fundraising, but with the kind of money schools need these days, they're more likely to turn to walkathons, silent auctions or just plain begging for donations.

all i can say is...wow...

That’s just plain wrong … I’m sure banning the occasional cupcake from a school bake sale is gonna make a real impact here

just more blatant paternalism from our government! we need to make the harm principal known to the peoples! we need to promote the social contract theory!

i'm so sayin these so i can review it in my head for my test monday! but in all seriousness, this is just another thing i don't believe the government has the right to govern. yes, obesity is becoming a problem in america, especially amongst kids and teens. but instead of banning bake sales, they should be promoting healthy lifestyles. promoting, not forcing by laws.

It is rediculous, however the idea behind it I agree with. Kids are getting out of control in this country. I can drive around on a weekend and see empty parks, baseball fields etc. Everyone is inside playing with the Wii's and not getting outdoors and being active.

I remember when I was a kid you couldn't keep me inside, now granted we didn't have all the gadgets that exist now, but if there was a manhole cover and some form of stick, we were playing baseball or something. Not saying all kids have to be athletic, but parents need to stop feeding their kids happy meals, start kicking them away from the tv/computer/gameboy/Xbox/Wii/PS3/ipod etc and get them moving.

Seeing a loooot of kids out there that could use to skip a bake sale or two. But the state getting involved in that fashion is rediculous.

i agree that more kids need for get out. hell, i grew up with these gadgets, as wartrac put it :)tongue: much love bruddah) and i was still outside most of the time.

i think it's disgusting how fat this nation is becoming. especially those kids on maury. i, personally, think those mothers and fathers need for be investigated by CPS. you don't let your kids eat everything in the house. and, if your kid is that overweight, maybe you shouldn't be taking them to macdonald's every day, yah?

i don't hate fat people. i hate the ones that complain that they're fat, or sue fast food joint for making them fat. i do, however, and this is prolly gonna get me flamed to high hell, but please hear me out, have a slight issue with some overweight peoples that use electric wheelchairs for get around, or take handicapped parking.

my step dad has multiple sclerosis. he's been wheel chair bound for about 17 years. also, due to his disease, cannot remain in the heat for long, because it jacks him up really bad. and yes, i do get pissed when i see someone parked in handicapped parking whose reason for the sticker is because they're overweight. the walk from the parking lot to the store will not kill you. in fact, it might do you some good.

i know it sounds like i hate fat peoples from what i just said. but i really don't. it just makes me mad when peoples who have it far worse in terms of being handicapped have to suffer because an overweight person doesn't feel like walking the extra few yards.

ok, now i'm gonna go hide
