The US is not universally hated.
It is, actually, far more universally admired, and envied.
The rest of the world looks at the US with a schizophrenic dissociation.
On the one hand, they resent our self aggrandizement as being number one, exceptional and great. On the other hand, they still look to the US for proof that our idealistic founding ethos is not just childish wishful thinking.
Most nations celebrated the election of Obama- because every once in a while the US manages to prove that we DO progress... that its NOT just a cynical old white men's club of monied fucks.
They still look to the US as proof that all different types of people CAN live together with remarkably little violence.
The 'hatred' you allude to is not really hatred. Its the same resentment that is ALWAYS present against whatever person, group, or nation is the power on top.
It used to be Britain that was 'universally' resented. Now its the US- and when China becomes the worlds foremost economy and power- it will be China that gets the shitty end of that stick.
