Can anyone else only workout at the gym?

I dunno why. Whenever I'm not at the gym, i just cant seem to find the motivation to work out. But when i do have access to the gym, i have no problems working out. Hell, sometimes i do more exercises than my routine requires and look forward to going to the gym.

Maybe its the body envy/male attraction energy being redirected into working out. Maybe its the fact that gyms are designed for exercise so doing the actual workout would feel less awkward and embarrassing than not doing it and just standing and staring, while exercising anywhere else is more likely to feel awkward. Or maybe its the difference between weighted and bodyweight exercise. With bodyweight exercise, i feel like im flailing my limbs around awkwardly, without purpose or without making any progress. But on the machines or with weights, I feel like I have purpose to my movements. I can tell what is good form and what is not. I can feel the effort I'm expending and I can increase the weight when it gets too light or decrease it when it gets too heavy. I can feel the contraction in my muscles and the pump when I'm doing the exercises right. I almost never feel the pump when doing bodyweight exercises. I just feel tired. Does anyone else experience this?

I understand. I do find that I can get a much more effective workout at the gym, and I use it regularly. I have a bench and sets of dumbbells at home for the days that something unavoidable comes up, just so I don't waste a day. I have to force myself more when I'm home because there are more distractions. At the gym, I'm focused, and know that I need to complete a routine in a certain amount of time, so I stay on track better there.

Can't workout at home either. It's easier to find a million distractions at home. There's always something else you can be doing at home.

But I find if I take the time to wake up, have breakfast, get ready, take my vitamins, and drive to the gym - it's no problem. I can be at the gym forever. But I can barely do a round of pushups at home w/o finding something else to do.

I work out at home. I am not driving anywhere to work out when I have everything I need right here. Hell, it's snowing out right now. Glad I don't have to drive to the fucking gym to get a workout. Gym's suck, and then you have to pay for it. F that!

I usually workout in my home gym but it's pretty loaded as home gyms go... Power rack, over 1,000 pounds in plate weight, cable machines, dumbbells going to 100 pounds, different benches, different bars, etc. etc. I absolutely love it and spare little expense in outfitting it.

It is my sanctuary.

I workout in a meathead gym sometimes for the camaraderie of being around other people who understand the love of the iron.

I would at home too if I had that setup!
I go to the gym because there are many things (machines, racks, weights) I need to use there. I don't like dealing with the people, but I have to.

Like you, I enjoy both the outside gym and my home gym. Sometimes I need to be around other guys for the camaraderie, as you say, and sometimes, I just want to zone everything else out.

Thanks! And you're right. It's hard for the best home gym to beat the variety you can find in a commercial gym. I built my body with free weights but whenever I'm on the road and I can find a gym loaded with Hammer Strength or old Nautilus equipment, I'm like a kid in a candy shop.

I built a lot of my muscle mass working out at home on a basic free weight set with a bench and adjustable dumbells, but have been training in gyms for 14 yrs now and much prefer it, more equipment to hit the muscles from all diff angles. And yea u get more motivated goin thru the ritual of getting ready to drive to the gym, dressing, taking your preworkout supps etc.

Like the OP, I enjoy going to the gym and am far more motivated there than trying to work out at home. Even when I run outside, It’s usually from the gym.

A big part of it is probably that I enjoy pampering myself in the sauna, steam and whirlpool afterwards.
