Oppression? Sorry, but I have to raise the bullshit flag. What oppression would have prevented you and him from going to a private place to express your affections?
It's probably more repression than oppression, I should clarify. I think for a lot of guys, closeted and/or married, its the anonymity of the hook up. No names, no talking, no smiling. Going to a private place would strip it of that to some extent. Also back in the day there was the threat of violence should you admit publicly that you were gay, and there was no grindr no tindr. Things have changed obviously but that doesn't mean that it still doesn't happen.
Then hooking up in a gym locker room would still be a bad idea.
While the anonymity might be a thrill, is it considerate to inflict this on other gym members?
it is definitely NOT considerate. Which is why there are certain codes and signals to indicate interest...and 90% of it is just mutual JO when no one else is around.

What kind of gym do you guys go to? Maybe it's the hours I go to the gym?
I face my locker when dressing undressing. Although I do walk to the shower with my towel on my shoulder. Don't want my stinky smelly sweaty ass on my clean towel before I get a shower.
I did hear a couple of guys in one of the changing rooms. But I thought every one went to the gym to workout not hook up. But what do I know.
