Members of Parliament have passed a divisive and contentious bill, putting Canada one step closer to becoming just the third country in the world to sanction same-sex marriage.

After years of debate, the House of Commons put Bill C-38 to a vote after its third and final reading late Tuesday night.

With the Liberals enjoying the support of almost all the Bloc Quebecois and NDP MPs, the legislation passed easily in a 158 to 133 vote.

Now, it will take Senate approval and royal assent to make Canada the third country in the world, after the Netherlands and Belgium, to officially recognize same-sex marriage.

Going through the Senate and it being signed should only take a few days and then its officially official.

WOOO!

Spain approved it some months ago, I don't know if they were awaiting further steps before it became fully legal, but it was approved. Yes, let us hope that the rest of the world will shame us into the future!

Don't hold your breath. The US still rejects the metric system!

Don't you know? God is going to destroy Canada on July 1st?
Just like he destroyed the Netherlands and Norway.

Canada's shaping up to be a fantastic place. Gay marriage is going to be legal, I've heard they're working on making marijuana legal... Best healthcare in the world...

Sigh...
I think I'm in love.

DMW, did you ever see the movie Kelly's Heroes? Donald Sutherland played a goofball tank commander known as Oddball, and one of his lines that's stuck with me is "Such negativity, man!".

Think positive, my friend. I know full well that the battle's far from won, but every step in the right direction reduces the distance we still have to go. The little victories add up over time, so enjoy them. :hippie:

Kink, I know how you feel, but nothing lasts forever. W and his crowd will eventually fade away. Yes, I am an eternal optimist! If that makes me crazy then so be it, but I will never lose hope. Have you looked at W's popularity lately? There ARE encouraging signs out there!

Well perhaps a more enlightened Canada will prove to be the place less stupid I've been looking for. Who knows, after a year of hillbilly hell in Florida it might just be the right answer. Besides, mainlining heroin to get bush out of my head just doesn't sound like much fun.

Sorry, but best health care in the world? You would'nt say that if you lived here.
God Damn Liberal Government has been screwing the people
for years and Raiding the Health care system for years.
But its still better than our neighbors.

Sorry for going off topic.

No, reality is always welcome. Our system sucks so bad here I guess we're eager to believe it's much better anywhere else.

So I've heard. Even if it's nationally provided, the level of efficiency is terrible, having to go on an inconceivable wait for even the simplest demands -- x-rays and what not. As for me, I've got some eh health insurance through the university -- go Teaching Assistants! -- and I've got a Zithromax pack on the ready if I get seriously ill. Other than that... um... smiling works.

Perhaps what I've heard about Canadian healthcare has been exaggerated, but I've heard it's much better than in the U.S.

Our healthcare system is very good.
Free healthcare... you cant get any better then that.
Yes, of course it has its problems, like waiting times, etc, but in general when I have used it, it has been good.
Our healthcare system, of being able to walk into an ER without having your VISA handy is an amazing thing when you look at other countries and how they function. Our healthcare system is one reason I am proud to be Canadian because everyone is pleasantly shocked when they hear how it works here.
