If the US had a parlaimentary system, We wouldn't have to suffer 2 more years of the person who is the greatest embarrassment in the countries history. Nancy Pelosi would be the head of government.

We suffered a decade of Jean; perhaps the most embarassing prime minister our country has ever sent out on the world stage. Much like Bush he made very little sense. Here is my favorite quote:
“A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven.”
-Jean Chretien

To those who have never seen Jean, PLEASE WATCH THE MAN IN ACTION; THIS IS OUR FORMER PRIME MINISTER EXPLAINING A “PROOF.”
YouTube - (former) prime minister jean chretien explains...

For those of you unfamiliar with the Canadian political scene, there was a fair bit of irony in the background to this motion. The current "Tory"* minority government promised to have a free vote on reopening the same-sex marriage issue in the last election campaign. This was a sop to their social-conservative grassroots supporters

You hit it dead on. He knew it would fail do he brought it up. It makes it a non-issue next election. I doubt very seriously that he really wanted it to pass; it would then be an issue again and he would be stuck debating it.

Jean Chretien wasn't that bad... He wasn't exactly the best Prime Minister that we've had, but it was pretty much his government that put the Gay Marriage vote on the table in the first place. Also, he was a smart man... Just not good at speaking English. (Not great at speaking French, either, from what I hear from Quebecers XD)

Anyways, I have no beefs with Gilles Duceppe or Jack Layton for getting their Members of Parliament to vote against the motion of using the notwithstanding clause. Whether or not I am against the motion, I do not want a MP that we, the people, elected voting to take away our rights. It really pisses me off that so many did vote to ignore a clause already added to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms... And I say this living in a constituency whose Conservative Party MP voted for the notwithstanding motion.

In my opinion, Steven Harper is much more embarassing that Jean Chretien was.

I agree with Honey. I would also add Brian Mulroney (another Conservative!). Canada has never been the same since. His government introduced the GST, which shifted the tax burden from business to the consumers.

After the Conservatives' humiliating defeat in 1993, the Federal Liberals under Jean Chrétien said they would get rid of the GST and pull Canada out of the NAFTA Agreement (election promises), but it never happened (they broke their promises).

Dolf, where are you from? East, West or North?

Not that I want a grudge match, but is is safe to assume that your are either from the East (read central Canada) or B.C?

I think it's a good thing that that motion failed. Most of the MPs didn't want to open a Pandora's box. Same sex marriage had been studied and scrutinised sufficiently by our politicians in our House of Commons before it received royal assent in 2005, so , in my opinion and for most Canadians, this issue is closed.

I was always of the opinion that Steven Harpher didn't want the motion re-opened. I feel he was simply trying to appear to try to re-open the issue so he could say that he did what he said he was going to do during the election.

So, when is Canada going to annex Delaware?
And California. Heck, why not all the Pacific Ocean states and the New England states. One can dream....
But at least the states can all rewrite their laws so that civil marriage is not restricted to an opposite sex. A few are already doing this. Eventually the rest of the country will come to see that it is just fine.
I wonder, tongue in cheek, if we ought to try to make same sex divorce legal first? Just kidding, of course. This is really a serious issue for couple who want to marry.
