Michael Moore is an obeese grotesque that should be deported to Canada.
I don't know how I missed this statement the first time through; how right.

I think he should be deported to a communist country so he can see how "horrible" free trade and self determination really are.

Good luck finding one, these days.
There are two beacons of 'fairness', freedom, and happiness left: North Korea and Cuba.

Either one will stand as an adequate example of how great a country can be if it just overcomes 'corporate greed' and learns to 'share.'

Moore should be deported to N. Korea, if I had my pick.

Michael Moore manipulates the pendulum effect to substantiate alot of half-truths he puts out there.

Who says that capitalism works because it utilises humanity's inherent notion of greed? Who says that capitalism in its pure form does not work, much the same to as if Michael Moore's democracy would be institutionalised - would it be in its pure form or not?

At best its just a simple attempt to get people to question - dont pay too much attention to the premise.

I agree with this, although I also think more people in America could stand to question what they are told *cough* birthers *cough*.... where was I?

Pure capitalism and pure socialism are both flawed systems. Ours isn't perfect, but it relies on a healthy mix of the two. Having two fundamentally different ideologies bouncing around our government is an excellent way to take a broader view of any particular issue.

It's interesting you mention Cuba. Maybe slightly off topic, but a gal I work with recently went to Cuba to visit family she had never met. She was born here, but her parent's are from Cuba. When she returned, I asked her how her trip was, and was anticipating her telling me about some "hidden gem" or "untold beauty" about the country, or the joy of meeting her relatives. Instead, when I asked about the trip, she got a very sad, contemplative look on her face, and just said "it's a prison down there."

I didn't ask her about anything else, the trip really saddened her, and it gave me a new appreciation the freedoms that many of us take for granted.

Thanks for the story.

Sometimes seeing communism in action is all you need.

The UN Human Development Index is a comparative measure of poverty, literacy, education, life expectance, childbirth, and other factors for countries worldwide.
It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. The index has been used since 1993 by the UN Development Program in its annual Human Development Report.
The HDI measures the average achievements in a country in three basic dimensions of human development:
1) A long and healthy life measured by life expectancy at birth
2) Knowledge, as measured by the adult literacy rate (with two-thirds weight) and the combined primary, secondary, and tertiary gross enrolment ratio (with one-third weight)
3) A decent standard of living, as measured by gross domestic product per capita at purchasing power parity in American dollars.

1 Norway
2 Iceland
3 Australia
4 Luxembourg
5 Canada
6 Sweden
7 Switzerland
8 Ireland
9 Belgium
10 United States

Thank you for sharing - this issue can be debated for a variety of reasons. I am not dismissing the list above, but I ask you to look at this ranking based on GDP and PPP (your term above) this is IMF ranking per Wiki

List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1. Qatar
2. Luxembourg
3. Norway
4. Singapore
5. Brunei
6. United States

Now - look at population

US - 309 million
Singapore 4.9 million
Norway - 4.8 million
Qatar - 1.4 million
Luxembourg 0.49 million
Brunei - 0.40 million

The issue is that you are comparing apples to oranges. If somebody can find a standard of living for countries with, say populations over 20 million (still less than 7% of the U.S. population) it would be easier to defend the argument of socialism and standard of living.

But to look at extremely small countries with rich resources - and compare them to a large country - does not a valid argument make for the merits of socialism.

Maybe Canada..depending on how you evaluation standard of living - but again - huge reservoir of oil.

If you want to make an argument about natural resources and standard of living - it belongs in a different thread.

But the fact remains that capitalism trounces the shit out of everything else. Period.

Just saw "Capitalism: A Love Story" tonight. Smashing movie. Which looks at capitalism from a multitude of angles through the decades.

The movie makes a very compelling case that capitalism, especially corporate capitalism, with its undemocratic system of rewarding greed (Wall Street, AIG, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, etc) --- is ANTI-DEMOCRATIC. Is fundamentally at odds with democracy.

I am not talking mom & pop shops capitalism.

I'm talking about the very richest 1% at the top of the pyramid that owns 95% of this country's wealth.

This corporate system needs to die a certain death. This is a system that is morally evil.

Capitalism needs to be brought down, and replaced with DEMOCRACY, equality.

Please see this movie. The film has a terrific sense of humor, too, all the way through. As do many of Moore's films.

Michael Moore is often entertaining but far from infallible. In "Bowling for Columbine" he interviewed a number of people in Toronto who "didn't lock their doors at night". I'd love to know just what neighborhood they lived in. I live in a small western Canadian city in a relatively "crime free" area and would never leave my door unlocked, day or night. Nor would anyone who wanted to retain their belongings.

I don't really disagree with Moore, but he has a tendency to make the US look worse than it is, and to make the rest of the world look better than it is.

Agreed. I generally agree with Moore's views for the most part, but he tends to sensationalize and make everything sound a helluva lot worse than it really is.

LOL..."Please see this movie"

please go to michael moore's toilet, scoop out a pile of his excrement and eat it.

Moore never has to worry about his bank account as long as he has folks like you who follow him no matter what.

oh and i just found this precious quote from Michael Moore...

"People like John Malone, myself and others who have been blessed, we all ought to be in a 70% tax bracket with the money being used to provide such important services as a real universal and affordable single-payer healthcare system."

i am curious, why Moore doesn't simply place himself in this proposed federal 70% tax bracket (of course, that does not include his state income taxes, which, likely will be roughly 8% depending on the state he inhabits) and donate the money he makes over the current federal tax bracket he is in, all to charity.

but i guess if the government doesn't force him to pay 70%, such a principled man shouldn't actually put his money where his mouth is, huh?

Moore is not a saint, a perfect person, or correct 100% of the time.

He does poke into interesting, often troublesome corners of our society to shed light on important issues that would get far less publicity in the absence of his provocation. Those who have the light unflatteringly shed on them (and their allies, mouthpieces, etc.) invariably make loud character attacks on Moore. And nitpick at instances of factual inaccuracy. But the larger issues Moore addresses invariably go effectively unchallenged.

Plus, he provides some truly classic docu-cinema moments. And if you don't believe me, then just watch this drive.

Michael Moore produces lefty politi-porn. I find it a soothing antidote to hate radio and the rest of the fear-obsessed populist-porn produced by the reactionaries who pass for "conservatives" today.

He's a master of polemics, which are not meant to be fair or balanced. Adults understand the difference and appreciate his POV, even if they disagree with what he says.

Fact-checking Michael Moore.

Michael Moore says: "The richest 1 percent have more financial wealth than the bottom 95 percent combined."

Indeed income disparity has literally soared in the last 30 years.

This is old data

Income Gap Is Widening, Data Shows

in that it was before the financial crisis but rest assured once the crisis has passed the Masters of The Universe will be back to the usual. Making vast amounts of money that make the average worker's salary look like a day off.

And lets be clear this is not about jealousy but rather what value the highly compensated bring to the table vs the actual workers of a company. Be they good times for a company or bad times for a company the CEO's and officiers always win win.

If you haven't already do check out the movie The Corporation. Eye opening to say the least.
