1954 Porsche 356 coupe in solid, ‘barn-find’ condition !!
Seeing this Porsche reminds me that when I was a kid in the late '60's on Long Island, my buddy's family had a pair of these 356's as their family cars. They lived in a tiny rambling house apt. with very tiny rooms like 8 ft. square just down the shore from our house. I remember that they had Playboy magazine on the table tops rather than stashed under the couch as was more common at my friends houses. A big deal for us as young boys.
What was noticeable about the Porches to me at that time was that though I think they were probably 1956-1960 models and not very old at that time, they were wrecks from my point of view. They had more paint than this "barn find" but they were in a similar worn out condition inside, and they felt like death traps.
I remember his mom driving us around on Halloween and being given the front passenger seat as the guest but finding the seat was not attached to the floor and would lurch around and threaten to pitch me into the dash as we traveled about in hilly Centerport, NY. I was not used to driving around in a mobile basket case.
My dad at the time had a Black '65 VW Beetle that was immaculate, and a solid, tight car. You could hardly close the doors if the windows were rolled up, it later became my car when I went away to college. I learned to crack the window a bit to make it easier to shut the door. Earlier, in California my folks had a "52 MG TD in green that they bought as a basket case when it was only a couple years old. When I was very young it was a beautiful car that did require lots of maintenance and was not very practical when my folks had two kids. My folks drove it in road rally in the Southern Calif. Mountains.
