I came in today for a bit during work and turned on my fave radio altecacktah Joan Hamburg. Her son is Jon Hamburg the Hollywood screenwriter. joan has been on radio for decades and was one of the original New York on a dollar books. I love her show b/c one hour there might be a politician on and the next hour Susie Essman or a pulitzer prize winner. Her show is funny, informative and hamishe.
Today I had the joy to hear Carrie talking about her one-woman Broadway Show Wishful Drinking. She was great. She sounded bombed before the matinee but was funny.
Here's the podcast. She also had Kelly Ohara and Cheyene Jackson on this second hour of the show. Today's show was taped at Sardi's.

Also here's a CUH-razy interview w/Suzanne Sommers about her recent medical horror story and of course, her new book.

The spelling might be off a bit. Altecacktah is basically 'the old folks' and hamishe is like saying it's homey, comfortable...home. Depends on which of us Yids you listen to or read...Like Hanukah is spelled a few ways. I try to consult Leo Rosten's Yiddish dictionery but didn't have time.

Yeah. I tried looking them up in Yiddish dictionaries but couldn't find them. I'm impressed with such obscure terms!

Well I've never heard them... you want I should know everything?

    Here's they are:

Alta Kocker: literally, an old shit; or as we say in English, an old fart. (sometimes called, simply, AK).

Haimish: down-to-earth, sympatico, approachable, a "haimisheh mensch" is a regular guy. "Haimish" and "Amish," both meaning "plain, simple" are from the same German root.

But back to Carrie Fisher. She is def. an altecacktah even if she's a tad young. I think she was born one tho and I hope to see her show.

Lots of gentiles use Yiddish words without even knowing it. It's a marvelous language. It's not a question of trying to go there so much as just doing it without thinking.

Did you listen to the interview I linked? I've heard her talk about her marriage to Paul Simon before. He sounds like a piece of work, even if there are 2 sides to every story!

I'm gonna guess it's enormously entertaining. It's a personal comedic memoir, not T. Williams but prob on par as far as entertainment value. Nick8 saw it or is going to very soon. Hope he chimes in.

Not to add a spoiler but one of the anectdotes, if you listened to the clip I provided involves Carries daughter who almost had a thing w/Mike Todd's grandson. Carrie had to do a huge graph to see if they were related......lol.........

Carrie is famous for being the uncredited script doctor in Hollywood. She regularly 'fixes' alot of movies or parts of them w/no credit. Money, probably. Credit no. Like an altecacktah does:biggrin1:
