Cars And Men

Not a lot. My partner is originally from Detroit. He is a car enthusiast. He used to street race in his foolish youth. He is not lacking in any way, but since he owns some fast cars, the assumption would be he's overcompensating. He isn't. He just likes fast cars. How people take care of their possessions says more to me, overall.

I don’t know that overcompensating is true. I do find middle aged or older guys sometimes indulge in luxury vehicles or sports cars, but it’s more a factor that they can afford new toys. When they were younger, it was probably video games. It’s not what I would spend my “wealth” on, I like less ostentatious things like travel. I like experiences not things, but whatever dude - it’s your money.

I think it can talk about your lifestyle... My car TOTALLY suits me on so many levels, but definitely not based on appearances. My primary car is something that you'd expect a pimpley 19 year old boy who vapes, plays video games and has carpal tunnel from jacking off to own. Picture a street legal rally car. I'm in my 40s, am professional, dresses conservatively, and... am female. When I went to the dealership, I inquired about said car, and the salesman said "Wait... YOU'RE here for THAT?" When I explained precisely what features I was looking for, he said "Yep, that's the only thing here that checks those boxes". Oh, and he also asked if it was for my son. *eyeroll*

I personally love it when a guy's car DOESN'T seem to fit at first blush but completely does when you get to know him. One ex was a big ol boy... 6' but THICK and over 300 lbs. He had a very high performance but very small sedan. Big ass motor in a little car. He was a racing instructor, but you'd never guess it based on his chonky appearance. My "wasband" was a suit-wearing executive M-F but drove a big pickup. The guy who's currently tripping my trigger and I'm just getting to know is a total surfer looking guy who has a classic Porsche. I dig the dichotomy. Unless he drives a truck. A truck always works for me.

A car that is clean and kept in good working order says a lot more.

Adherence to road rules is even moreso.
I have been a passenger in a small 4 cyclinder Asian built 4 door and been in terror for my life.
One hand on the dash and the other had a death grip on the door handle.
That was the first and last time I went out with him.

I’d say driving style says more, but I do notice a line between pride of ownership and status symbol.

Huh, my guy drives the largest version of a minivan. He never had kids.
But he's got guitars and gear. And travels to work.
Like him, it’s older but kept up. When damaged, repaired. Unlike him, it needs a bath more often. Lol.
He also keeps his home well maintained if dusty.
Hmmmmmmmm.....
I delight in riding in the van because I have to step and swing up like it’s a truck.

As for me, I’m driving a fairly new suv.
I’ve never had a new car before, only new to me.
It makes the traveling portion of my business much easier, and I moved everything I owned in it.
I keep it washed, I wipe down the dash often, vacuum almost often enough.
I need to take the seat covers off for a wash, and hose off the floor mats.
And figure out a crate system for my work gear.

I honestly have not ever drawn a comparison between compensation and car type. I have been guilty of being quite judgemental as to the personality types behind a wheel. I.e SUV = wanker all the way to Dodge challenger = here's my number...

Being a muscle car enthusiast myself I'm sure others have drawn their own conclusions about me too XD
