The Law is very careful with wording and semantics. Not guilty does NOT mean innocent. It means that the prosecution was unable to prove to a jury of 12 people that Casey Anthony killed her daughter BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT, a very high bar. She was "acquitted", or released, from the charges against her, but she was in no way shape or form found innocent.

I'm not gonna split cunt hairs about the meaning, but does not innocent mean guilty or not guilty?

Yet another problem with the death penalty: the standards of "beyond a reasonable doubt" are far too high, because the stakes are too high.

This is a shame to justice...The defence and juriors should now have to have Casey as their permenant unsupervised baby sitter for there children. Lets see how they would vote now and as for being tried twice...lots of guilty cases get retried in the courts. Why can someone guilty when and if evidence shows otherwise be reversed but not the other way around? I like the idea of unproven if it leaves the case open.

Instead she'll sell millions of copies of her "I'm Still Here, Damnit!" memoirs by the end of the year...

How do you reconcile that opinion with the concept of the presumption of innocence, under which the accused is held to be innocent of a crime until proven guilty? This is a fundamental legal and human right around the world. If a person is acquitted of the charges against her because the state could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she was guilty, then in fact she is still innocent in the eyes of the law. She may in fact be guilty as hell, but technically she is innocent.

IN the Bahamas you are Guilty until Proven innocent. So it is not a fundamental legal and human right around the world. The only difference is in the Bahamas, Money makes you innocent real quick.

There was no concrete evidence to convict her so the jurors did what they had to do. I am sure she will not have an easy life after this publicity.

The government did not produce enough evidence to prove to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt that she killed the girl. It's as simple as that. You folks need to turn off Nancy Grace.

This.

I followed it and they simply didn't bring a strong case. They produced almost no forensic evidence which supports murder. I totally believe she is a sick human being, almost certainly negligent and sociopathic, but that doesn't mean she murdered her child.

I'm surprised that the Bahamas does not follow British common law. Are you sure you are not referring to tax laws?

So now what is the official story on how the baby died. Is there a murderer still out there. Or the baby drowned in the pool?

The REAL killer in the OJ Simpson case did it.

This whole thing has been a study in American voyeurism. The mother of that child had already been condemned in the media and the court of public opinion.

What the fascination (in an entertainment way) is with the troubles of a family in Florida escapes me entirely. Now the American public is outraged that they didn't get their pound of flesh.

Well my fellow Americans here's to your belief in the Judicial System. Don't like the verdict? Tell the world they got it wrong. Last time I checked this is not the way the American Judicial System works.

I applaud the courage and conviction of all the jurors.

Sometimes death is too simple and too easy a punishment for the truly wicked. She has to live with her conscience (assuming she has one). Once again, common sense eludes the "justice system" ... movie rights and book deals ... pending.

What do you expect from a jury trial? Anyone with a remotely seminal occupation will go out of his/her way to escape jury duty. The pool that's left cannot ever be a representative sample of the US population.

As I watched the news coverage of people's reactions to Casey Anthony's acquittal I was taken back to the moment when we learned the verdict in OJ's trial.
In both trials the prevailing opinion was that a conviction was a sure thing. And, both times we were wrong.
Both cases also support the strategy of not accepting a plea bargain but fighting to the very end.

there was reasonable doubt. The prosecution failed so show how the girl was killed, how long she had been dead, etc. If I were a juror, there would have been way too many holes in the prosecutions case to be able to convict her. Is she a shitty mother? Most likely. Did she kill her daughter? I don't know, and we may never know.
