I am all about folks using their privilege to make the world a better place. Celebs have an unprecedented platform to bring attention to important issues that may be overlooked by media/culture/politics.

I also like knowing someone like Roseanne is a racist piece of shit I should in no way support.

Ehhhhh depends on who it is and who's listening. Social media makes it difficult to voice their opinion on things without an insane amount of backlash. It's like Operation. If you touch the edge just a TINY bit.....*makes loud annoying buzzing sound* or like a drop of blood in an ocean full of great white sharks. Unless there's some new law that prevents them from talking/typing/tweeting, they'll say what they want.

Interesting question for me, especially given the definition of "celebrity" in today's world is so, shall we say, generalized. Who/what exactly is a celebrity?

To answer your question though @Tight_N_Juicy, I don't care for "celebrities" who use their expression of opinion to simply try to stay current in the spotlight/press. Who otherwise couldn't get attention without saying/doing something outrageous or stupid that garners attention. But I also get that for some, any attention is good publicity. Gotta stay current in the peeps minds. Even when they end up looking real stoopid!

And I don't want to hear opinions from anyone for that matter that's not well thought out, steeped in some type of factual reality. Not some conspiracy. That can't be verified. And I don't care to hear about how anti- someone is; I'd rather hear why one is pro- whatever it is they are opining about.

For example, if a "celebrity" is pro- or anti-Trump, tell me why. Why are you for what it is you are for. Tell me that. Give me some specifics that caused you to have that opinion. You just might get me to pay attention.

Conversely, if your opinion is based on being for someone/something because you don't like the alternative, that's bullshit. If one states an opinion, be man or woman enough to justify your position. Otherwise, STFU. I'm gonna ignore the hell out of you. Kinda like I do (for the most part, lol) certain posters in the Politics Section here. You believe it? Support your belief with facts. Give me something concrete that I can research and learn about that I may be ignorant about. You know, reality. And nothing I detest more than conversing/debating/arguing with a closed mind.

And for goodness sakes, please practice what you preach. If you are on one side of an opinion/movement, don't let me hear that you're guilty of what it is you are railing against. That's when I'm not gonna ever listen to another thing you may say. Regardless of whether or not I may agree. Cuz I got nothing for a hypocrite. Except contempt.

I think we need to take celebs’ opinions for what they’re worth. Some celebs know what they’re talking about because they’ve done their homework and put their time in.

Others are no different from anyone else with a twitter account.

What irks me is when a celeb doesn’t speak out with an opinion and people attack him/her because of it.

I would prefer if people thought for themselves, instead of being influenced by celebrities. If you look at social media, for example - a lot of people have a strong opinion about certain issues. However, if you really talk to them about it - it becomes quite clear that most of them only have a surface-level understanding of the topic. Their opinion is based on something they've seen or heard; not personal experience or research.

Celebrity culture and social media have led to this weird place, where just having an opinion is fashionable. I almost miss the days of widespread apathy. I now see people I like and respect wasting their lives, arguing with strangers on the internet, often about topics they don't fully understand themselves. People talk through each other, rather than engaging in a real debate. It's just opinion vs opinion, with no real conclusion.

A lot of 'celebrities' these days, haven't done anything to earn their fame - but I wish those famous for their creative work would focus their Twitter energy into their chosen field. I often wonder if Shakespeare would have written anything, if he'd lived in the modern world. I think there's a good chance that he'd have chosen the easy route and spent his free time on Twitter, instead.

I'm kinda on the fence on this. Not so much, but it's not a simple topic to answer.

I don't think people should let a celebrity influence their opinions the way simple minded people tend to do... I mean, just because I enjoy the music of Insane Clown Posse doesn't mean I'm going to change my mind on a topic if they come out with an opposing opinion to mine. I mean, they're not political geniuses. They're not geniuses on any level at all. I simply find them entertaining .

Then you have instances like Kaepernick, and doing his part to bring attention to police brutality in the country (whether or not you agree with how he went about it, that WAS the reason he was protesting) which is a serious issue which deserves to be discussed more than it is in the media. So, bringing attention to the issue is something I find worthy of applause.

I also like what @MickeyLee says for example about Roseanne. If a celebrity happens to be a bigoted asshole, I'd prefer to know so I can avoid allowing any of my money to go towards their personal bullshit. I don't boycott simply if someone had political disagreements with me, but I do if they're actively being fucking racist bigots like Rosanne did.

Openly misogynistic assholes too. I prefer to know how they feel about women, so that I can avoid ever letting them see a Dime from me. No ad revenue, no NOTHING.

Depends. Like someone said, some celebs do their homework. And they have an amazing opportunity to influence others due to their celebrity.

Then you have Kanye (omg!) or Gwyneth. Not a clue between the two of them. Jade vaginal eggs? Chakra (or whatever) stickers? Put the goop away.

The problem is, people listening to celebs don’t use critical thinking skills, they don’t actually do their own homework. It’s work to look for the truth.

They're humans. They have opinions. They just have opportunity to speak with louder voices than us plebs on the other side of the TV screen. But because we're on the other side of that same screen we get to tune them in or out depending on how much of a shit we give.

Let 'em speak.

They have a right to their opinion, but it is just their opinion and should carry no more weight with the public than mine or any other persons. Just because they may be famous doesn't give them the right to force their opinion on the world with more weight and validity than any one else. If they feel so excised about a cause then work within the system to change it if it is for the good of all not just a sub set of people. In my opinion some make a lot of noise but when ask to constructively work on the problem that they see they do not.

Anyone with a soapbox and an opinion believes they have a duty to spread their beliefs. I see enough Facebook to know this.

It's all a matter of scale.

What it comes down to is how large and secure is your base where you might risk your reputation by espousing a contrary opinion. Think about The Dixie Chicks. Yet Charlie Daniels didn't catch any heat opposing the next president.

Do I listen to any of them? Oh hell no. Even if I agree with them it's not because my opinion was swayed by their mouthing off.

Depends.

For example Bob Geldof / Live Aid was incredible

Kanye West? Shhhhh

Hubby was in his early 20s when Live Aid happened. He actually made it to Wembley to try to tag along as a roadie for one of the groups. He claims he made it in, but he never said he made it as a roadie. He did make it to Farm Aid the following year.

I told him that he was less than an hour from my house! He said we should have met up. I said he would have been shot.

They have a right to voice their opinion and you have a right not to listen.

I like artists for their art. I don't care about their political opinions unless it seeps into their art. That is when it starts to bother me. Sometimes.
