Do you ever feel sorry for someone who is name dropping, and bragging about who they know?

One time I was on a flight into Charleston, SC. An attractive young sailor was talking to the woman seated beside him. They were visiting, and seemed to be getting well acquainted. He began to brag about how his mom had been the star on Romper Room. She quickly lost interest and began to read a magazine.

I felt kind of sorry for him. Should he have asked Mr. Do Bee's advice first?

The Tom Jones or a Tom Jones?

I went to school with the kids of a few really drippy and crap Irish celebs, I wouldn't even drop those names in Ireland, never mind here where nobody at all has heard of them. I suppose I kinda have to though - the most famous of them was Dickie Rock (great name, huh?).

There's a couple of Irish celebs I'm proud to have known, however briefly - Bronagh Gallagher (Pulp Fiction, The Commitments) and the late great Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) - mainly because they are/were lovely, lovely people.

I have 2 cousins who play in the NFL...
I have another cousin who was a heavyweight boxer...he fought Mike Tyson...
I have another cousin who is a songwriter...
and an uncle who had a singing group a looooong time ago...they had one hit song that still gets airplay to this day...

Criss Angel was a personal friend of mine before he found fame and fortune. We would talk on the phone at least once a week for many years. The last call was him telling me about his new show on A&E and then I never heard from him again.

The only thing worse than that is when you can tell the person is pretending the relationship is much closer than it is. They're talking about the person like they hang out at each other's houses daily, and everyone is being polite about it even though their intuition tells them that they know who one another are and that's it. I did several independent films before I started working my "real" job, and saw this all the time. It's really sad to watch a person trying to convince everyone that they're somebody by exaggerating the internship where they filed a piece of paper some B-lister had touched, or the acting gig where they had an incidental, two-line bit part in a movie someone recognizable starred in, hoping to make it sound like they have friends in high places. Makes you want to shake them and tell them to go acheive something they could be proud of for themselves.

I know Peter Garrett (lead singer of Midnight Oil, now a politician). I also know Judy Nunn (Australian TV actress).

Now when I say I know these people, what I really mean is: he once walked past me in my local shopping centre and she once walked past me in Sydney Airport. :biggrin1:

Seth Green...we never got along..this is when we were like 11 or 12 years old.he always said he'd be an actor though.

Mike Piazza....back when i had waaaaaaaay more talent than brains(i was 13 years old)i played in a few baseball summer leagues with him,he was 18(i think every guy on that team was like 4-5 years older than me) skinny, quiet type of guy, really cool though.the coaches wanted to try to show me humility(it didn't work,i was too good an outfielder and ARROGANT)
and made me take all the equipment in after practice(even the bases),so i missed out on the lunch that got served to the team.but Mike gave me half of his hoagie.
