Ive just come from the Celeb Endow forum where I noticed a couple of posts have been edited by a moderator - without the posters permission. Reason given is "inappropriate language". Is anyone else alarmed by this? Is this an Adult website or not? Have the mods now become Nannymods who go round cleaning up our nasty words? I just find it absolutely wrong & bordering on offensive that someone else can edit my posts. Who needs protecting from such language exactly? WRONG WRONG WRONG for so many reasons...

I can take the cleaning up of a few words over a Mod that sides with friends. For the most part the mods here have a thankless job that they dont get paid for.It may not be a perfect world. But lpsg sure beats that roach motel site down the road.:biggrin1:

Editing someones insults long after theyve been posted aint gonna do shit to stop there initial damage. Damage done. Classic case of closing stable door when horse has bolted.

I would hope that if insults are now being edited out of posts by mods that this will be soon. It really came out of nowhere, and to quote JumboJet's PM to me about the matter in Celebrity Endowments, editing it out wouldn't "change the meaning of the post in any way".

would someone define"inappropriate language".....I have NO idea what that means....are we not allowed to curse anymore????
Going by my experience you can no longer colorfully tell someone to have sex with themselves or to perform fellatio on a rotted penis and die.:biggrin:

Warn, suspend, or ban a member, or lock the thread for what's been said, but don't edit his or her words to what you believe they should say. Doing so is quite possibly more offensive than anything else you can do. Perhaps freedom of expression is not appreciated in Denmark but it is here, as the mods are always quick to point-out, in the United States where the forum is hosted.

Something is rotten in Denmark.

Offence and insult are part of everyday life for people in Britain. All you have to do is open a daily paper and there’s plenty to offend. Or you can walk into the religious books section of a bookshop and discover you’re damned to various kinds of eternal hellfire, which is certainly insulting, not to say overheated.

The idea that any kind of free society can be constructed in which people will never be offended or insulted is absurd. So too is the notion that people should have the right to call on the law to defend them against being offended or insulted. A fundamental decision needs to be made: do we want to live in a free society or not? Democracy is not a tea party where people sit around making polite conversation. In democracies people get extremely upset with each other. They argue vehemently against each other’s positions. (But they don’t shoot.)

At Cambridge University I was taught a laudable method of argument: you never personalise, but you have absolutely no respect for people’s opinions. You are never rude to the person, but you can be savagely rude about what the person thinks. That seems to me a crucial distinction: people must be protected from discrimination by virtue of their race, but you cannot ring-fence their ideas. The moment you say that any idea system is sacred, whether it’s a religious belief system or a secular ideology, the moment you declare a set of ideas to be immune from criticism, satire, derision, or contempt, freedom of thought becomes impossible. -Salman Rushdie
The fact is that censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion. -Henry Steele Commager

I agree, there should be NO, editing of peoples posts, it makes for alot of questions and posts to as way and what for, makes the thread confusing and in all rights is not listed as a terms of service or rules regarding usage. I don't even see where this is an issue unless its attempting to repair recent damage from so many long term members leaving the site. There are a few cry babies here that can't take a simple comment without running to a mod and complaining there posts are not appreciated. People are freely using the site to promote there photographic work and scanning copyrighted material from mags and posting it on the site. I would think this would be more of an issue then the common language most of us hear on a daily basis.

Edited that to what I think you meant :eek::eek:

 Sorry couldn't resist.

Not really.

The phrase, as I typed it, is used colloquially (and inexactly) in the United States as a locutive trope. Changing it, as you did, changes its impact of meaning as understood by native speakers of American English.

That's OK though. I'm sure you know best and I wouldn't want to offend anyone.

It's not too often I agree with you, Deno, but you've got it on the money there, I reckon.

Also, what counts as an insult and does it have to involve curse words? I've been insulted here several times - sorry, I'll correct that - people have attempted to insult me several times and the inclusion or exclusion of swear words has had precisely nothing to do with how I have taken the insult. An insult can be just as cutting, if not more so, without swear words - so are the mods going to start editing all negative comments? If so we can kiss goodbye to half this site.

Also, again , one form of censorship easily leads on the next. Yes, this is a private site and the owner is 100% entitled to remove stuff he is not happy with - but the rules need to be clear. If this is to be a censored site we need to know exactly what the rules are. The current ToS does not cover that.

Oh, jason, don't take umbridge, you've completely missed the joke - that is precisely what I was driving at. By editing your post to what I think it meant I have changed its meaning to what you didn't mean. It's a demonstration of how censorship doesn't work. Sorry - I thought that was more transparent than it actually appears to have been. My bad.

Well I still don't think people should be insulted, that in and of itself is not adult like. I am not sure what was edited and for what reason but to much arguing is going on in the forum these days and it's usually caused by a few poorly chosen words.

Also my previous response was not intended towards any certain individual so please don't respond as if it was.

Pardon me sir, but do I understand you to say, by the argument you propose, that the only photographs permitted at this fine establishment are those which we alone produce?
