I note the posts that have to do with locker rooms and the behavior of guys these days in them. They made me think about the significant changes that have occurred in locker room behavior in the 40 years I have been spending a lot time within them. When I first was in locker rooms there was almost never attempts to hide one's dick. Guys might have tried to cover up their flabby chests or guts, but seldom their dicks. Now a lot of guys don't even take showers or do so in their underwear or swim suits. All of the showers were gang showers. Seldom the case these days. 80-90 percent of the guys wore jocks, even to go swim. Some would even wear them as the attire for using the hot tub or the steam room. Seldom see a jock these days. No such thing as compression shorts. Now lots of them. Most guys wore tighty whities as underwear, no boxer shorts, except for the nerdy older guys. Now lots of boxers and boxer briefs. Speedos were very common back then, especially if you were very manly and in good shape. And this was not just the case for lap swimming. I remember the lifeguards where I am swam all wore Speedos. Now mostly gay guys wear them. In those days, we weren't even sure we knew gay guys. Back then no one shaved their pubes. It was a sign of honor to have lots of pubes. Today lots of shaving going on. What other trends in locker rooms have you noticed?

Looks like everything you say is quite valid. The gym I use is frequented by a lot of seniors and they don't care. They walk around nude all of the time. I even saw one standing in front of a hand dryer drying his pubes.

Some gyms offered laundering services, or workout kits (shorts/shirts/jocks) that were worn and then turned in for a fresh set for the next workout. Only a small handful of high-end member gyms that still do that.

Gyms used to have old metal lockers, some that were full height, others that were an open mesh style- and it was common to see a strap pulled thru the tiny holes while it aired its manly musky scent into the room.

Guys didnt fear having their gym-used gear snatched as fetish trophies, as the gym was generally a more trusting place where guys could consider leaving their freshly-stripped gear in a pile on the floor while they took a shower.

Showers were open team style with guys uncovered. Bradley poles were more common. Soap was a communal bar of ivory or dial laying on a small disk instead of the modern pump.

Gyms were filled with men who were more alike, as the users would be more focused on lifting plates and not working fancy machines. Guys seemed to be more social, as spotting a buddy was the thing. And a gym director might keep a chart and break out his tape measure to record measurements taken to show regular improvements.

Yes, this pretty much matches my experience, especially the speedo comment.

Just the other day I was talking with someone and we were trying to figure out when wearing a speedo stopped meaning the wearer thought he had an impressive physique and started meaning 'gay'. I drew a blank. Anyone have any ideas?

I wear Speedos because they result in the only form of tan lines that I consider acceptable.

Nothing more ridiculous than board short tan lines, in my opinion.
