Changing room showers, under 25's

I don't shower in open showers and I don't have a small cock and I'm not shy. But if I'm not fucking you, then you're not seeing my cock.

I can't stand all these people that think it's dumb if someone were to wear a towel. Obviously you wanna see their cock or else you wouldn't be bitching. They obviously don't want you to see their cock. End of. Move on.

Anyways, I don't even go into the locker rooms because I go for a work out and then go straight home. I'd rather take a shower in my own shower than to be forced to wear shoes in a gym shower. Like really?

I don't go to the gym to pick up dudes. This is 2011. We have Grindr.
Why would you have to wear shoes?

Tbh, I've previously been of the opinion that ppl moaning about clothed showering obviously have an ulterior motive and want to see ppl's dicks.

However - having started going the swimming pool regularly this yr, I've changed opinion slightly. It's usually quiet when I go so thankfully I'm often in the shower by myself - however, on the odd occasion there are more ppl there, I find I'm the only one naked in the shower.

This proves slightly embarrassing - but not enough to make me keep my shorts on, smell of chlorine, and have to shower all over again when I get home. Naked showering after a swim is a time-saver. That's all.

If people don't like it...tough shit.

I think it is at least in part a cultural thing. If you ever go to Iceland and swim in their geothermally heated municipal pools (a very popular activity even in winter when people hang out with their friends and family in the hot pots which are basically hot tubs of varying temperatures) you are required to shower nude before putting on your swimsuit (the pools and such have minimal chlorine). It can be a shock for many tourists but the locals of all ages have no problem getting completely undressed at their locker, walking naked to the shower (you usually put your swimsuit and towel in a cubbyhole outside the shower), take a fairly thorough shower, then put on their swimsuit and head outside.

I've been at Korean spas in the US where a group of college age guys will come first time and be surprised by the required nudity in the gender segregated wet area but most of the time they pretty much when in Rome it and get naked.

That said I think it varies from gym to gym. At the local Ys I'd say most guys 18-25 who go in the locker room get naked if only briefly and those that use the shower do so naked for at least part.

I was self-conscious when I was a teenager. Nobody in my public high school gym class showered. It was an eye-opener when I went on a weekend white water rafting trip up to West Virginia. The public bathroom had a wide open shower area -- several spigots with a pull chain to start the water. Most of the kids in my group showered in their underwear (plus the youth group chaperones), while the older men went au naturel.

I manned up when I went to college. The dorm I stayed in had two communal bathrooms on each floor, with two curtained shower stalls. (Technically it was a four shower cluster, but only the back two were curtained.) There was a bench right outside the stalls, along with several towel hooks.

I would say about 40-45% of us didn't care about modesty, and a small percentage of the athletes. We'd either come in with towels around our waists, whip them off and head straight in. Some others (like one of my former roommates) would come in their sleepwear, strip and head in. Some of the more casual guys would towel off next to the bench. The other percentage didn't do the 'towel dance', but would change behind the curtain or hang their towels over the curtain.

The older you are, the less prudish you are.

Last week I had a curious gym experience. I got a guest pass at my gym and I took a good bud with me so we could talk and socialize while working out together. He is young guy in his 20s (half my age), but we get along very well and see each other often. We were there mid-afternoon on a weekday, so the gym was basically deserted.

First trouble sign: While changing in the locker room, he did the ridiculous towel dance that is so common with guys his age (even though we were alone in the locker room).

Second trouble sign: He wore cotton boxer shorts under his gym shorts. Who does this? If someone is bothered by the idea of a jockstrap, I can understand wearing briefs. But getting all sweaty in cotton boxer shorts I find to be very icky (aside from providing absolutely no support).

Third trouble sign: He freaked out when he saw me standing naked in the locker room and told me to cover up with a towel (once again, we were completely alone). I got annoyed at his prudishness and refused. We got into a whole long discussion about how his generation are all pussies when it comes to gym locker rooms and showers (we have the kind of relationship where we can get in each others faces like that). Then he decided to move to a different locker that was away from my location - not because I got in his face, but because I refused to put on a towel and he was embarrassed that someone would see me.

Fourth trouble sign: After our workout, we sat in the sauna together for about 15 minutes. We were completely alone the entire time. I sat naked on my towel while he sat wrapped in his towel. Our conversation continued about the bizarre attitudes of his generation about locker room nudity. I even told him that he needed to join the military to man up get over himself about such issues.

Fifth trouble sign: When we moved to the showers, we took the last two shower stalls that were facing each other. We had the place to ourselves. I left my shower curtain open so that we could continue talking and socializing while showering. He kept his shower curtain closed - not to shield himself from me - we have seen each other naked plenty of times - but because he feared that someone else might enter the shower area.

My gym is brand new (less than a year old). The facilities are very nice and clean and upscale with new equipment. My bud enjoyed the place and was even texting pics of the place to his friends so he could show off. He asked if he could tag along on my membership again. I said I would add his name to my membership once he stops acting like a pussy in the locker room. Even that enticement was not enough to move him. He simply replied "Fuck you." (Even though it sounds that way, he was not angy - we have that kind of relationship that allows us to speak frankly without offense, and we still get together all the time.)

I just don't get this younger generation. This guy is no prude. Has no problem sexting his penis all over the internet or skyping masturbation sessions with strangers (he tells me this frankly), but he is freaked out over someone seeing him naked in a non-sexual locker room situation. I have to wonder if this weird and illogical behavior will moderate as these guys get older. It makes absolutely no sense, and even he can't explain it.

You say you have seen each other naked plenty of times. How did it first come about that you were naked together? When and where? Usually it would be some kind of locker room situation in my experience. If it was one of my mates I would explain to h that if he is comfortable being naked in front of me, one of his friends, why would he be afraid about someone he doesn't even know seeing him? For me it would be the other way around. I've had similar experiences with mates, new friends I have met and just other guys I have observed on my time at the gym. Admittedly I have never had someone who seems so extremely against getting naked as the guy you are mentioning but eventually they tend to relax a bit. They gym I use now is a town centre gym and has a lot of young guys that use it. I would say the ones that tend to have the biggest issue are the 18, 19, 20ish year olds. Most lads I think have probably seen enough nudity and had enough locker room experiences by the time time they get to say mid to late 20's, that they have got over the issue and just join in with the rest.

This is probably the most succinct and accurate statement on this subject I have seen in any of the myriad of posts about changing room behavior. So true.

I have been a member of our local Y for many years. I have experienced the same cover up, don't see me naked behavior as the other guys. I'm sure it has to do with the way you were raised. I have seen this type behavior with all ages and frankly find it hard to understand. I HAVE NEVER FELT LIKE A SEXUAL OBJECT IN A DRESSING ROOM ANYWHERE OR THAT ANYONE WAS STARING AT ME! I have seen young kids either all but run to the shower covered by a towel and all but run back to get there clothes back on. I have seen the younger kids not even shower after working out. There is something liberating about taking off your clothes in the locker room with other guys and showering in a communal shower. Quite frankly I enjoy that part as much as working out. It all feels good. Some guys you would think taking a shower in the mens room was miserable. I have raised boys and I taught them changing in the mens room is normal. We have all changed many times being naked all together. I raised them to think nothing of it. They have all turned out to be normal young men and am very proud of them. It's all in the way you were raised!

I don't know what the community considers the younger generation but I'm in my low 30s, went to HS and college from the late 90s to mid 00s and in my experience most of the guys I was around in athletic groups, teams or even just PE were not all that prudish. Am I in the minority?

PE for example was filled with guys from all levels: the dumb jocks to the smart jocks, the dumb nerds to the smart nerds. We were all mixed in there. After most PE events we didn't have time to shower, we changed from our school clothes into our PE uniform, and back at the end of class. We all wore compressions or jockstraps; the coach would do a check at the beginning of every class, no boxers. Everyone took off their boxers to put on their supporters, no one wore a towel, no one went into a stall.

The only time we would shower would be if we did swimming for PE. The pool water stank. Made perfect sense. We all wore trunks that we brought from home during the swim session. After swimming we'd head down to the showers, gang style, 20 heads along two walls, parallel. I was never afraid of being naked but there were some intimidating dudes in my PE class, I was intimidated by them. They were big guys, played football and were very used to being naked. Most of them relished in it. I wasn't friends with them, but I put up with it. Got naked. Everyone did. Wasn't a big deal if you could avoid the jock's attention. Well, not for me anyway. One dude was tiny and unfortunately had a tiny prick. He was the laughing stock of 2 jocks, they had lot of fun at his expense (just verbal, thankfully). Needless to say he lived through the ordeal too.

I was a swimmer and track runner in HS. I was not all that talented, not super athletic, but definitely not the worst guy on the team either. In swimming we wore speedos. After meets we usually didn't shower unless we were traveling far from home. But during practice and at away meets we always showered after. We wore speedos in, peeled them off, rinsed them off, scrubbed, shampooed, walked out ass naked. No problem. Went to our locker, grabbed our towels. There were no towel hooks near the showers and the nearest lockers were 10+ feet away. So we did the naked shower and the naked walk. Unlike the football players (from my PE experiences) we swimmers weren't really showy nudists. We did our thing, had typical banter in the shower, complained about early morning practices, the usual. By the time we toweled off we had our towels wrapped back around us, got our clothes back on, went to school or home.

Track was the most prudish in HS. Half the guys showered, half didn't. Frankly I only showered about half the time myself. The guys who did shower consistently were the throwers and the jumpers. In other words: the buff dudes. Kind of interesting reflecting on it now. The guys who had pumped and trimmed bodies were the ones showing it the most.

It might be because I went to a liberal school for college, but when I swam in college it was completely different, There was very little prudishness. The girls were sans clothes too. We often had naked events, naked swims, naked mile runs, and of course naked showers. I didn't do track but I remember the cross country guys did naked miles all the time too and we could hear them in the shower after practices (our locker rooms were adjacent to theirs) and they were loud and goofy in their locker room (soap and shower games, all that nonsense). My roommate did ultimate frisbee and they did naked tourneys too.

I mentioned this in another post, but in my experience I don't see many other young guys basking in the freedom of the birthday suit because I don't see many other young guys in locker rooms (or other acceptable areas) at all. After I graduated I didn't do a lot of working out so I wasn't in a lot of gyms. I imagine a lot of <25 guys are the same as I was a few years ago. Now that I'm older and have a little more money I'm in gyms and spas more often. Most of the other 'young' guys I see in those venues are my age.

I don't know if that makes sense or not, but that's my take on it. Maybe I was fortunate enough to grow up in a reasonably free environment. I think as guys get past 25 they find themselves in situations where they can get naked in public more often. Additionally, as they mature and gain life experience, they get a little more into it. Not to sound too diplomatic about the whole thing, but I think it's a common result of maturity and for the time being anyway, most guys who get back into the gym/spa/shower/nude atmosphere are going to be above 25.

1. Nudity in showers was encouraged to prepare young European and American men for the military...to get them over their "I'm different / I'm special" hang-ups. If you popped a boner, so what!

2. This coincided with calisthenic-centered physical fitness classes for PE. The purpose of the mandatory shower was to immediately wash off the impurities sweated out through exercise, thereby aiding the kidneys.

3. Teamwork organizations like Boy Scouts were also encouraged.

Summary: Public education was seen as a gift -- but, one with a responsibility -- to serve and defend this great county.

Now, education seems to be something to be endured -- games have replaced physical fitness, sports have become a "bribe" to try to get kids to not drop out at 16.

-- there were many side benefits to the early programs: every one even the poor got a daily shower, kids were in far better physical shape. Some schools even had free breakfast and lunch - plus the showers- so that the student had higher levels of nutrition and hygiene.

I went to a well-respected college on the east coast where the men's gym included a large swimming pool where nudity was mandatory. The rationale was that swimsuits harbored germs - there was a lot of mononucleosis around - and that high chlorine levels caused of lot eye irritations. So, low chlorine, no swimsuits, end of story. Sure, some of us were more bashful than others at first, but we quickly got over it. Every body is different, but in the end a male body is just another male body.

It's probably about how you've been raised and if you have body issues. I used to be ashamed of the way I looked as a teen but now going to a public shower or a sauna doesn't bother me
