He could feel the crust in the corner of his eyes. This wasn’t a quick catnap. He’d been sleeping a while. Kristine was going to notice this time. There was no hiding it.

His feet hit the hardwood floor much quicker than he expected. No bed frame. The mattress was on the floor. Something sticky found its way between two of his toes. Now that it was disturbed from its resting place, it released a bit of its scent.

Life Saver. Cherry.

Wiggling his toes until it was free from its new resting place, his knees and ankles screamed a bit at him as he stood up. His eyes were adjusting to the darkness now. He could see the outline of the person he had just been sleeping next to. They looked peaceful. He was jealous.

As his eyes became more and more accustomed to the darkness, he began finding pieces of his clothing he’d frantically been searching for.

A sock.

A shoe.

Pants.

Slowly his outfit came back together.

Retrieving his cel from his jeans pocket, he hit the side button to activate the backlight.

Fuck, it was nearly 5 a.m.

He used the backlight on his phone to help illuminate the room a little more, helping in the hunt for the rest of his clothes.

As he sat on the end of the bed to slip on his shoes, his forearm brushed against a bare foot peeking out from under the sheets. He started at it for a moment. Then reached out and wrapped his hand gently around it, feeling the soft warmth of the sole under his fingers. Gently caressing it. Wanting desperately to jump back under the covers and feel the warmth of that body under his.

Then a soft voice brought him back to reality.

“One more before you go?”

Then the light on the night table came on. He looked over in the direction of the voice.

Staring back at him, behind a big, beautiful, playful smile, was one of the most gorgeous men he’d ever seen. It all came rushing back now.

The beer. The dancing. The flirting. The drunken propositions. The sex.

And Kristine.

“Thanks, but maybe some other time.”

He continued to pull on his shoes as he felt two hands running up his back and rest on his shoulders. Then a soft set of lips on the back of his neck.

He stood up, looked down at the beautiful, smiling man looking back up at him, and gave a quick smile before heading to the door.

“I don’t even remember his name”, he thought.

But he’d always remember him as Cherry.

Cherry Life Savers.

He still had that smell in his nose as he slipped into his car.

His cel gave an encouraging beep as it was plugged into its charger. A quick glance in the rear view mirror told him he’d removed all the sleep from the corners of his eyes. He ran his hand through his hair in an attempt to bring a little life back to it.

And then lowering his head and burying his face in his hands, he cried.
