I was aware of the situation of the Uighurs and thought that this is possible, but never heard about it.

Thank you for the article.

I have heard of the problems in China, but the recent stuff with NBA has made me take a closer look at it and it is shocking.

Have you heard of the exit bans they've been doing?

Exit bans? Like they can't leave the country? No I haven't. - or is it the other way around, they can't enter?

I know they can't leave the province and move to another part of the country...

I'm not quite sure, but aren't they even moving Han chinese into their province to make the Uighurs a minority even in their home territory...
This would make an independence impossible and most likely will help wipeout their culture.

Trapped, alone and 'desperate to come home.' American siblings barred from leaving China

Moving people around to crowd out the local population has been part of their playbook for a while.

I knew that some Chinese aren't allowed to leave, but this is something absolutely new to me.

It's nearly unbelievable, but as more as you think about it as more it fits to the chinese government.
They simply give a fuck about human rights and other nations. And that's the big difference to Soviet Russia. While they didn't care much about human rights they cared much about other nations and what these nations think about Russia.
If Soviet authorities would have act the same way as China did, their empire could have remained. The west wouldn't have done anything against it.

China is different. They want a positive picture in the west, but not for every price. It's better to "do what is needed" and try to fix the image problem with propaganda and threats.
This will increase as more powerful china will become...

It becomes interesting if leaders start to talk about former glory and restoring it, we had and have it in the west and with Xi we have it in China as well.

If we think about what it means in case of China, it's a threat to the whole world.
China saw itself as the centre of the world and they dominated they world they knew.
Yes, they mainly cared for themself, but if you think about the first "modern" Europeans and how they were treated as they entered China for the first time, it's not a positive story...
In the eyes of China trade wasn't needed. In there eyes China already had everything and the goods they brought to China was nothing else but a tribute.
The same way they treated the northern barbarians...
They dominated their world and no one was equal to them.

You could argue Rome acted similar, but I see two differences. While they dominated their world, they still accepted trade and that other cultures could do incredible things.
The other point is that Rome might be a part of the European history, but it ended 1600 years ago. While the chinese Empire collapsed only 100 years ago.

You're right. China historically has seen itself as the center of the world, that is literally in its name, and the old tribute system was built around the idea of Chinese cultural superiority.

I expect Chinese cultural Imperialism to ramp up quite a bit in the next few decades. It will be interesting to see how things develop.

The best thing for everyone if it wouldn't, but Xi leaves little doubt...
This in combination of "make America great again" is a threat to the world. I don't think America will back down too fast and China will be way to eager to realize some imperial wet dreams. I specially think about Taiwain and China's influence in South East Asia and its ocean.

Cultural imperialism with Chinese characteristics

Above article is about Chinese cultural imperialism in Africa.

Here is one way the Chinese could bring their brand of cultural Imperialism to the US. What if the Chinese central government decided to start opening up factories in rust belt cities that have been hit hard by automation? These cities would welcome the new economic activity so I don't see any real resistance on the local level being a problem. When bringing in these new jobs, the Chinese government could insist that the local public school system start teaching Chinese and open up a Confucius Institute in the town to help with the lessons and offer study abroad opportunities for local students...

I know the above is very tin-foil hat type thinking, but it would be an amazing way to grow their soft power in their biggest competitor.

China already has plenty of its institutions in the USA and Europe and thet use it to influence and spy... it also has and education back ground, but it's by far not their only purpose.

I don't think they will use it in a way you described, they don't have to.
I guess China will accept that Europe and the USA will have a different system to them. China has a very centric history, but they also accepted different systems outside China, as long as it has no influence on their inner politics.

I think China will increase its influence on SE Asian and Africa, but won't bother about the Americas and Europe, as long as we know our place and what we are allowed to do and what not.

As long as we don't criticize China, we can live the way we want...

I think China will largely leave its neighbors alone, as long as they submit to China in a few vital areas. I don't expect for them to push their form of government on any country. What I do expect is for them to push Chinese culture and ideals hard everywhere.

Like Putin, president-for-life Xi is a repressive, autocratic gangster.
The difference is that Xi commands a very powerful economy and a massive army and his expansionist ambitions pose a major threat to world peace.
