I'm a little obsessed with alignment. I have some concerns about my own but can't really tell if I'm out of alignment or not. I was wondering if any of you have seen a chiropractor and if so do you feel that it was worth it in terms of you feeling better and having better posture. My concern stems from the fact that I favor my right side more in most things and think that over the years I may have torqued my pelvis and vertebrae. Reason being is that I tend to have pain in my right knee at times and only my right knee. I would love to have things put back the way they are meant to be if indeed they are out of alignment.

I have always read that chiropractic is junk medical science and I tend to concur. I've read the papers and they don't make sense. Yoga as a practice is perfectly designed to fix problems like the ones you are mentioning. Your right knee is probably sore because you have an injury to your right knee. If your vertebrae were injured, you'd well know it.

If you are weighlifting lots and over the years, you are training big muscles and usually ignoring the little ones. This causes dynamic stress in the musculature in relation to the skeletal system to change. Because the big muscles are stronger in relation to the small ones than they were, they can start to cause slow building injuries. Again, Yoga does wonders.

Go to a doctor and have them look at your knee. If there is nothing there that is treatable, then it's another issue. I think there is something there.

Go to the chiropractor. You'll feel great after. The research has caught up and the most respected journals has evidence based studies that show chiropractic care is more effective than standard medical care alone. You're in Houston? I have a few guys I can refer you to.

If it helps you, do it.
If not, don't do it.
I've never been to a chiropractor, although I do have back problems. I've been to my MD and a PT. The MD did chiropractic-style manipulations that helped with my alignment. Not so much with the back problem. The PT helped the back problem.

Long time back issue guy. Chiropractor is hit or miss. A good PT is the best choice. I've been to both. And some will say they both have their places. But PT has better long lasting results. The reason? Your an active patient. They teach us proper core strengthening for the specific issue you have. Part of it may be yoga poses. Part of it strengthening exercises.

Why pick one thing? Try different modalities of restoration and figure out what works best for you. I see a chiropractor, get soft tissue work done, and do some other things to keep this machine running.

I have been to a lot of chiropractors through the years, some good, some not so good. They all helped but many just rushed the process and tried to see as many patients as they could.

My current chiropractor is a female Goddess who takes as much time as required to assure that my alignment issues are addressed. She uses adjustments, acupuncture, and Graston to work on my problem areas.

Chiropractic can provide palliative and temporary relief. So can a 99 cent bottle of aspirin.

I concur there are some cases where chiropractic care can be therapeutic, but it appears most of the training chiropractors
now receive is in the area of how to market their services, and lobby the State legislatures to assure they get their paws into
the funds held by insurance companies for providing real medical care. In my area, he chiropractors spend a fortune in advertising, surpassed only by the car dealerships. Many local wrecker drivers pass out business cards for chiropractors, and I'd wager they get a kick-back for any new patient they direct.

Physical Therapists in many states now have to get the equivalent of a doctors degree. A good physical therapy workup and adherence to the stretches and exercises directed by a physical therapist remain the best solution to muscular/skeleton related issues.

Before you see a chiropractor go to your GP and get an x-ray of your spine, hips and knees. I know too many people who have disc and/or joint disease made worse or unhelped by chiropractors.

For your knee an x-ray will determine whether you have osteoarthritis. A blood test will determine whether it's rheumatoid arthritis. If it's really bad your doc might ultrasound or MRI your knee to look for ligament damage.

You should eliminate other causes before assuming your knee pain is caused by alignment problems.

Nobody is ever perfectly "aligned" that's a load of bull. Chiropractors have their place for temporary relief of minor tension etc. Acupuncture and ibuprofen help too. I went to a honest chiropractor for very bad back pain, went twice, and he was honest with me that I needed to get an MRI and see a back surgeon. The MRI revealed a herniated disc and the back surgeon then recommended physical therapy for the injury. Three weeks of therapy later I was back at work carefully lifting 100lb boxes. My pain comes back from time to time but I remember my physical therapy and how to stretch properly. Also using back brace to hold an ice pack in place is amazing.

Thanks for the comments guys. I asked a friend to asses my posture and he's very knowledgeable about anatomy and health. He basically told me some of the same things that you guys have said. His assessment is that I wasn't perfectly aligned but he says not many people are. He asked me a few questions concerning my family and I told him that my father has lower back issues just as I do and he said I should see a doctor to see if I have degenerative disc disease. He noticed I had lordosis. My right shoulder is about an inch lower than the left and the reason for that was that the arch of my right foot is noticeably lower which explains the pain in the right knee. The remedy for the feet are to get some good rigid orthotics. Custom orthotics would be best because the pressure points on each foot are different and the arch on each foot is also different. My pelvis has a slight lateral tilt and is turned to the right. My issues aren't very noticeable to the average person unless they were looking at me with the intention of finding something wrong. It's just that I am aware of it because I know my body well and I am a bit obsessive about symmetry.

Absolutely. I go to one and it's made a big difference. I didnt realize how bad my body was out of alignment. I feel much better overall and my back feels better.

I go in for realignments once a month. Most of the cost is covered by my insurance.

I sustained a neck injury fighting a house fire two years ago. If I don’t make frequent trips to a chiropractor I get debilitating headaches. Both my children received their first adjustment the day they came home from the hospital from being born.

After reading all the responses, and having tried everything, I can honestly say that yoga and aspirin are a joke! Also, it's NOT junk science. But if it works for you, go for it. Don't go deterring anyone else fro trying something that's harmless.

Having said that, I was in a car accident many 100's of years ago where I tried to exit the car through the windshield. Didn't work. Caused damage to my neck which caused severe debilitating whole head pain to point I would cry. And they cam around like clock work about every 3 months or so, stay around for a day to 2 weeks, then vanish.

A friend talked me into seeing her boss who was a chiropractor. After having tried everything else, I gave it a shot. It worked. After 2 years, The monstrous headaches were gone.

Fast forward through the years, I would see a chiropractor every now and then when I could tell I wasn't all lined up. I would immediately go see the chiropractor after I was all healed after breaking my back 3 different times. The last time took 2 years of treatments and strengthening my core before I was right.

On Halloween night, a lady with HID headlights blinded me which caused me to crash my motorbike. Hit the pavement, rolled twice, and broke my collar bone and shoulder blade, and cracked some ribs. Looking at the x-ray, I can tell that I'm *REALLY* out of alignment. After seeing that I made the comment that my chiropractor is going to be happy to see me again! I have pain, numbness, and twitching in my left arm and pec now as well as my butt falls asleep a lot and string pain in my left calf. But I can't go see him until I fully heal.

Finding the right chiropractor can be difficult. You want to find one that learned the old school way and doesn't rely on machines and gadgets to align you. And you don't want one that snaps you in half like a breadstick! If you're having trouble finding one, seek out a doctor who is a D.O. They are higher than an M.D. and have had further training which includes chiropractor.

I feel like a million bucks after an adjustment!!

I have had great success with chiropractors! They have helped with near debilitating neck and shoulder pain (from auto accidents and a construction site accident), and with physical therapy after rotator cuff injuries on both shoulders, as well as acute issues with foot and knee tendons. I have at times had a near weekly need for chiro, at other times once a month, but for several years now have only been 2-3 times per year.
After getting my alignments so we'll tuned, my yoga practice made the chiropractor not so necessary. A rigorous yoga habit (with 18 years of coaching on good form) means that I now enjoy a more pain free life at 68 than I had at 28. The clincher is that after mastering the yoga headstand my neck and shoulder issues just disappeared!

Lots of ideas on this thread. I've had success w/ yoga, PT, and Chiropractor. Smart to consult physician first. If you want to get a rough idea if you are in alignment, look in a reverse mirror.... so that you see the opposite of what you normally see in a common mirror. Your alignment issues will jump out at you. ("Reverse mirror" is my term... do it in a place where you have two mirrors perpendicular to each other)

It's best to see your primary care physician first to make sure you don't have an injury that an adjustment will make worse. I blew out a disk in my lower back and once I saw my primary to get the appropriate tests done she recommended a combination of physical therapy and chiropractic care. It worked wonders and I didn't need surgery to fix it. I'm more interested in the physical manipulation to keep things aligned as opposed to their holistic approach. The chiro suggested I up my daily intake of calcium since it can work as a natural muscle relaxer. It worked, but unknown to me at the time the dose was just a little too much for my body and I ended up with a pretty painful kidney stone. I'll take the cracking, but not taking the advice on supplements. Your mileage may vary.
