    Oh dear. :(

I didn't always agree with him - but he was incredibly intellectually rigorous and perceptive.
    Kinda scared me, sometimes. :p

I didn't agree with him on a lot of issues, but I was able to respect him because he was usually able to intelligently defend his positions.

He was the catalyst for me buying tickets to the Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2 years ago. Sad, sad day. Intelligence Squared will never be the same again.

I'm a young contrarian, and proud to be. “The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”

"I have found, as the enemy [death] becomes more familiar, that all the special pleading for salvation, redemption and supernatural deliverance appears even more hollow and artificial to me than it did before. I hope to help defend and pass on the lessons of this for many years to come, but for now I have found my trust better placed in two things: the skill and principle of advanced medical science, and the comradeship of innumerable friends and family, all of them immune to the false consolations of religion. It is these forces among others which will speed the day when humanity emancipates itself from the mind-forged manacles of servility and superstition." --Christopher Hitchens, letter to the American Atheists' convention, April 2011

Like jason_els, he died of esophageal cancer. Again, like jason_els, and similarly in many other ways, he was one of my heroes.

Someone representing a group on Facebook called "Tea Party Conservatives of America" posted this comment a couple of hours ago:

I have looked through the comments (there were 140 at the time that I viewed them), and can happily report that I have found them to be without exception scathing. Some samples:

A great loss. I'll miss his no nonsense, incisive writing.

The man was incapable of a shallow thought or sentiment. His earnest bravery earned him at least as many detractors as admirers; I count myself on both sides, depending on the issue/question.

I woke up (mid-afternoon, as my body-clock dictates) and was shocked to read the news. Andrew Sullivan (with whom I share a deep ambivalence as well) was, truly, one of CH's very close friends. His blog today remains an almost unreadable compendium on and of public grief. I frequently found myself sitting back in my chair, awash in the tears of a miserable sense of loss for someone whom I'd never actually met.

He was as overly self-indulgent, surely, as any man who has ever existed: excessively hedonistic in all things. Yet he could produce articles of such insane clarity and moral depth even as, I'm quite sure, he could barely stand up (but then, one usually writes sitting down).

Perhaps my favorite Hitch quote, out of so very many, as he was something of the Wilde of our times:

"If they'd given Jerry Falwell an enema just before he'd died, they could have buried him in a matchbox". Please forgive if I'm off by a word or two, as it comes from memory. But he did say it on Fox News: of that I'm certain.
