There was the New David in Manhattan in the 1970's where the trolls were rather good at leaving non trolls alone, plus a dark room upstairs reeking of poppers. Also because it was really just a modest-sized smokey box with theatre seats.

Actually, the best action was in the mens room at the New Gaiety on the West Coast where standing around with your dick in someone's mouth or up their ass was normal and expected, because the place was so well-lit. Yes, so much for the "good old days."
