hp6969,
That's terrible that you have had such a bad experience. But, like I have said before, for me getting cut has been a tremendous positive. I really do think there is a huge amount of individual preference involved, so there is no "one size fits all," answer.
But, I'm going to post some information about where I got cut, how much it cost, etc., because I would like others to have that information. And if anyone ever has any questions on getting cut, I'd be happy to help you any way that I can.

I went to see Dr. David Cornell in Atlanta, Georgia, and yes it was entirely elective. It is possible to have your health insurance cover it but only for a valid medical reason (phimosis, etc.). I called and was able to set up an appointment just a couple weeks away.
Dr. Cornell charges $2500 for the procedure, and there are three prescriptions that you need to get that are about $80. (However, the only prescription that I really needed was the antibiotics. I only took one percocet immediately after the procedure, and I only used the anti-erection meds a couple of times. But everyone is different, so I would recommend getting them just in case.)
Now, if you don't live anywhere near Atlanta you also have to provide transportation. I live in the DC area and I found a round-trip, same-day flight from Dulles for just a little over $200. I took the MARTA train from the Atlanta airport to Dr. Cornell's office, which cost just a few dollars.
I understand that for people who don't live near Atlanta that it may seem too far, but I would recommend Dr. Cornell enthusiastically. He is a urologist, and has made adult circumcision sort of his specialty. (If you google Dr. Cornell you'll find his Adult Circumcision Center website and his yahoo group, which is where I found him.) Dr. Cornell has performed literally hundreds of circumcisions and can, I think, be considered one of America's top "circumcision experts," if you will.
He has a lot of before and after photos available, and there are plenty more on the yahoo group. I did a lot of research before I got it done, and I heard a lot of horror stories and saw a lot of terrible looking after pics. I think you can understand that I wanted my circumcision to come out as well as possible, and I really think Dr. Cornell was the right choice. I was in and out of his office in just over two hours and he and his staff are incredibly accommodating. Besides his skill behind the knife, the biggest benefit is that he will take a lot of time to figure out exactly what you are looking for and then try and give you that exact result. I don't think that you can find that kind of attention to detail in your run-of-the-mill urologist who hardly ever performs a circumcision.
So, that is why I chose Dr. Cornell and, as I said in my other post
http://www.lpsg.org/116955-getting-cut-one-best-decisions.html, I am so happy that I did. I know that I sound like a plant from his office or something, but I'm just relaying my experience. To put it succinctly: I didn't want to fuck around with getting circumcised and I went to Dr. Cornell to make sure it went as well as it possibly could have. And it did.
