I was just searching for car insurance with my mum on my dad's computer, she used the addressbar to try to backtrack to a previous site, and she found - suprise suprise - Dad's history of porn sites.

This was exceedingly embarressing for me and stressfull for her, and she, in a moment of revenge made me put internet restrictions on his computer and password them. My dad is no longer permitted to view any pages which are rougher than mild swearing.

So, I thought I should bring it to the attention of LPSGers, especially non-computer saavy ones, that your PC gets dirty inside, just like a porn mag - you leave stains, virtual ones all over the place. Or rather: the porn sites do, as they tend to install malicious software without you realiseing it, and are left, like a stain to your good name, in the browser history for your unsuspecting friend/spouse/son to find.

So, people, after visiting porn sites:

1 Clean out your browser History!
The porn sites you just viseted are left in a list of the sites you recently viewed, to erase them from history (so to speak), in Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options, then in the box, find history, and click "Clear History", it is also adviseable to change the number of days items are kept in history to 0.

    2 Run a Spyware/Adware Scan!
You can get free programs that will scan your computer for spyware and adware for you and remove these pesky programs that slow your computer and spy on what you do. I personally use Spybot Search And Destroy and Adaware SE Personal to keep my computer clean.

    3 Run a Virus Scan
If you downloaded anything, you are at risk of a virus attack, and if you don't have virus protection, you are running into a warzone, naked, with a target painted on you. Get some. The leading industry virus Scanner is called NOD32, it never misses a virus, but for free you can get AntiVir which I use.

4 Have a Damn Good Excuse!

I don't know if my mum will confront my father about finding his porn links - but if she does, I hope for his sake he can wriggle out of it - and he can't blame me as it was his login in which we found the links!

    General Computer Security

You really should have a firewall, if you don't, get ZoneAlarm, it's free and at first gives you lots of security warnings and popups, but it's reliable and settles down when it gets used to what software you use. Firewalls keep invaders out and your computer safe, though they won't stop a determined hacker - so don't piss off a skilled hacker!

Or just inform people that your business is your business.

Having a significant other, or parent, or children present always makes it difficult... but people will understand.. or at least they should:tongue:

    LMGDMFAO!

My dad ruins about 2 computers a year because of porn. I think he went crazy when he found out he could watch women do anal online.

Pfft! You should always cover your tracks. Firefox has a "Clear private data" tool which would get rid of his history and cache, etc.

If you're worried about security, e.g. viruses and spyware, why not give Linux a try. All I use at home is SuSE Linux. No worries about WIndows or Mac viruses, rigid file permissions, etc

    Gah, Linux...

I spent a good deal of time laughing at a Linux conference who's slogan was "It's the future!".

The best browser to use is AVANT browser. You can choose to completely disable scripts. A script is something a website runs and can automatically install things with it etc.

Mozilla Firefox is supposed to be safe too but I've had a few viruses from using that...and going on porn sites of course. My favourite site:

    www.sinfulvideo.com

That's actually safe too btw, the dodgy ones are the TGP's.

Can never go wrong with XNXX.com, it's totally clean and all of its links are too.

I've also never had a problem with Firefox in my life.

FireFox is the best, my combination for a "clean" computer is to use FireFox with Norton AntiVirus and run ad-aware often. And visit safe sites.

    Thats my 2 cents.

If you're really serious about keeping your computer clean, I'd stay away from any commercial website period. j/k. But if ever you stumble accross something ILLEGAL, it stays behind too. Oh, and clearing your history and cache doesn't get rid of that data. It just ignores it. The charge on the drive remains for that sector, even after a few overwrites.

The DOD uses either 3 or 5 pass random data overwritters for all of their drives EVERY DAY on secure machines after work. It takes about 8 to effectively kill all of the data. (and data retrieval is getting better) so every two days there's no retrieving anything except from the last two days.

This computer's ridiculously clean, but I'm meticulous about it. i value my privacy.

I'm responding just to pull this thread to the top of the pile for a while again. One of the funniest threads I've encountered. SomeGuyOverThere seems a very good chap, worrying about his dad like that. Still, it is the first six replies that are priceless.
