No, I get all that. I've been in plenty of locker rooms and in competitions and seen the male bonding that occurs, but I maintain the word mystery because at bottom (no pun intended), that's what it is. I mean, why a slap on the ass? Maybe a coach should grope his wrestler after a win.. or smooch him... or hug him like a dad... or do a little dance. There is an infinite number of possible responses, so why THAT one?
(and I doubt that anyone thinks of potential injury as an aspect of ass slapping. That seems unrealistic.)
Ok, I was almost with you until the line about the smooching and such.

Man c’mon, be serious. Are you really trying to conflate what is often a harmless gesture of encouragement i.e. a slap on the ass with an overtly sexual act such as kissing or groping?

A slap on the ass in a locker room or on a playing field differs greatly from a slap on the ass in say an office building or restaurant.

And fwiw, groping or kissing someone/anyone who hasn’t consented to it is wrong and should earn the offender a swift punch in the face/balls or both.

Also , what locker rooms have you been in where you haven’t witnessed some hugging at some point or some goofy dancing? Some sad ones would be my guess.

Sports are an intimate thing. That intimacy can take on many forms that you don’t normally see between men often off the field. It doesn’t have to mean what it usually does off the field either.

I agree with much of this, and I've certainly seen guys being goofy and vaguely sexual (like wagging their junk, etc).
You have misinterpreted my post. The term "smooching " to me isn't sexual at all. It's just like a light-hearted , often humorous kiss. Maybe you've seen guys in a group and one dude will surprise the other with a smooch on the cheek just to get a laugh. It's not exactly French kissing! Besides, which is more sexual?: a pat on the ass or a smooch on the cheek? Why, at my friend's wedding some years ago, in the reception line, I was so pleased that he'd found the right woman against all odds, that I myself grabbed him and kissed his cheek. It was a perfect display of male-male affection with no hint of sexuality. In fact, of the four alternatives (grope, smooch, hug, dance) only the "grope" is sexual in nature. And anyway, I was just being imaginative, trying to suggest somewhat humorous alternatives to the classic ass-slap, trying to answer the question I posed: "Why THIS particular gesture? (the ass slap). Why not another?" It's a sociological question. Also, one might ask, why don't women do this to each other in similar situations?
So don't misunderstand me. I get the male-male encouragement, but I still ask the question Why this gesture in particular? I have speculated on it in previous posts, but I suppose it really has no definitive answer.

My friend, mysterious?

Have you ever spent time in a locker room or on a sideline?

It’s stems from the team mindset of ‘oneness’ and It’s all about keeping yourself and your players heads and spirits in the game. The adrenaline and testosterone on the sideline, bench, dugout etc. can be immeasurable during the height of a contentious game/match. These hormones and even endorphins are needed to get through the truly big plays, or say the really formidable opponent so players and coaches are constantly engaging each other in these ways. It cuts the other way too, if an otherwise good player seems to be having an off game a coach shouting at a player to “GET YOUR ASS IN THE GAME” followed by a swat on the ass might be what jolts that player into action.

Aside from all this, there’s the practicality of the ass as a non-working muscle. In no sport would you want to run the risk of hurting someone’s arm, shoulder, leg or other needed body part. This again makes the ass prime real estate to give that excited pop of enthusiasm without hurting a player.

Back to that ‘oneness’ - it extends to the locker room too. You show me a team that executed well on the playing field and I’ll bet you there is plenty of playful, non-sexual ass slapping, towels popping on bare skin, spontaneous nipple tweaks, jokes and off-handed comments made about each others naked bodies and all other manner of locker room hijinks. If players don’t bond well on a personal level it would be that much harder to connect on the field. Coaches are at the helm of this fraternal order.

And even in wrestling, which many of the photos on this thread are based. Though they are individual matches, they are all trying to win their match to advance the entire team. They know the how hard each of their players has worked in practice and during those intense moments a swat on the ass before a match either for encouragement or to after a match denote a job well done reinforces the bond and keeps that adrenaline high.

So it’s really not a mystery at all. Least not to me. An enthusiastic slap on the ass means exactly the same thing as a high five from your coach or two players excitedly jumping in the air and bumping chests. Except it’s just way hotter to folks like us on this thread. ;)
It doesn't only apply to coaches and their players. I've seen referees slap wrestlers on the ass as well

I've witness wrestlers hugging their coach after a match before in the "stand and fuck" position like seen below. Regarding the other persons comment on smooching, it doesn't happen between coach and player but I have seen straight bros kiss each other on the cheeks all the time. I posted a link to a video on another thread where two straight guys kiss briefly at a football game college party so it definitely does happen. There was another video on YT where a girl challenges random straight guys to kiss for money. I can't locate it anymore and unless I would link it. I don't know how that's not considered sexual at all when you lock lips with another person. Too me, its more sexual to lock lips even for a second but I guess according to the bro book, as long as its "no homo" or nothing escalates afterwards then its all fine. Straight men and their bros are a total mystery and leaves me fantasizing about them

I think we're seeing how complex this whole interaction is. As I was contemplating this the other day, I suddenly remembered seeing Russian gymnasts at the Olympics who would finish their routine and then actually kiss their teammates on the lips! Again, culture enters into it: in that sports culture, apparently that's no problem. Plus, we all know NO gymnasts are gay anyway...

This isn't the video I had hoped for, but it's kinda funny. Lots of athletes angry in a one-on-one and then one of them kisses the other as a way to defuse the tension and it changes everything.

one of my new fave pics of all time
Photoshopped or not, it's a goody. I always wonder tho: do wrestlers REALLY get hard-ons in matches. It always seemed to me they'd be fighting for their lives, so to speak, and their bodies wouldn't send the message to get an erection. On the other hand, there appears to be much anecdotal evidence to support the ideas .I guess that evidence is an "athletic supporter"...

One of the worst videos I've ever seen. Half of it is blank. Anyways, I wasn't exactly focusing on other what athletes do in other countries besides the USA. My point was only about athletes who are American and the culture we have here.

Yeah, I get that. This isn't the video I was looking for anyway, tho it was kinda close.

OMG. This is so eye-opening, but it also contains ridiculous statements:

1:26 Freud never said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

1:29 "Why on the butt, of all places?"
" I dunno... where else are you gonna slap, I guess?" (Let's remember that you don't have to SLAP a player at all....)

it's the first part of his body that you could touch him and he could feel it... pads... and there's not much guy there, do you wanna hit guy or hit pads....whattya gonna do, hit him on the back of the helmet... all that does is HURT YOUR HAND...." Whaaaa? In a sport where 250-lb men SLAM into each other it's too difficult to slap a guy on the helmet??

2:20"I favor the palm... but you never cup... and you never squeeze...." But just slapping is not gay....

3:03: "large linemen...you can time the jiggle... for 3-4 minutes". hahahahaha

4:20: "There's a rear-patting gene that we all possess."

That whole guy vs pads argument flies out the window in wrestling, of course.... or baseball...

Here's Key & Peele's humorous take on the question:

SO interesting, this whole question. It's a comic gesture, really, but look how seriously the guys in this video are, even when they're laughing.

Does anyone else wish they would have wrestled in HS. I was too naive to understand how awesome it would be. And I was very athletic so it grieves me that I did not do it.
I admired it but not enough to do it. I did enjoy watching the guys wrestle, tho, and in that era they ALL wore jockstraps.
One kid on the team challenged me to a casual wrestling match for some reason. he was sort of jokingly saying wrestling was harder than any other sport. I agreed to "wrestle" in after school in our regular school uniforms: white shirt, gray pants. As we started, he got into wrestling position and I just kind of bent my legs. He was surprised that I didn't get into a more aggressive or defensive stance, but I simply didn't know any better. In fact, he was so surprised, he stopped and asked the other guys there, "Does he know something I don't know?" I didn't, and he pinned me pretty quick, which I didn't mind...
