Thank you Jason,
I was refering to the Blue Ringed Octopus when I mentioned "the most poisonous octopus in the world."
With venomous mammals I was refering to male Platypus. They, and not the females have poison bearing spurs on their hind legs and there are documented cases of people dying from being stung by them.

You might like Texas and then you may not. I might get hit for this but Texas is a fairly conservative and religious place and not like other places in the first world in that respect. Texans are unlike other Americans as a whole. If you're really interested in the state then look at its remarkable history and carefully investigate if it really is the place for you. Parts of Texas are metropolitan in character, the rest is quite insular. Many outsiders find it a bit bizarre.
Jason is too kind, he sugar coats everything.:smile: I was going to say this earlier but couldn't figure out a nice way to do so. Texas has a lot of great cities and great people BUT there are huge pockets of antiquated, redneck, racists. If you are cool with associating or doing business with folks who hate anyone different from themselves then you will be fine.

This thread reminds me of a scene from Family Guy.
The family moves to Texas. Brian the Dog is at a liquor store buying some whiskey.
The clerk hands him the bottle and says "And here's yer gun"
Brian says "what?"
Clerk "Texas state law; Buy some liquor, get a gun."
This is not actual law, but the message is poignant: Texas is a hotbed for some very anti-progressive sociopolitical ideology.

That'll work but I would be careful about inter-racial dating there.:frown1:
I find it amusing in a sad way that advertising suits have decided as of late that white man + vaguely black woman is just the most common dating combination in the world, and must be included in all alcohol commercials. You'll never see a black man with a white woman, though, because that's just barbaric. - which is really what people mean when they say they're against inter-racial dating. They're really just against black men dating white women (for the most part).

Don't know what that had to do with the topic. But...

Quite right. I stand corrected about the octopus (cute little thing that it is). I am very aware of the unusual anatomy of the platypus. The shrews, while venomous, have not killed anyone to my knowledge.

Texas just has vipers, alligators, gila monsters, North America's only terrestrial neurotoxic serpent, the coral snake, fire ants, killer bees, scorpions, Portugese Man o' War, televangelists, Bushes, and venomous shrews.

These are the most dangerous! :biggrin1:

I find a shot gun and a post hole shovel are useful when respect and understanding for Gods creatures fails.

I've been very restless for a while now and have been thinking of moving to America...Well Texas to be exact.(God I just love that Texan accent)
I've belive it is very simalar to my home state of Queensland.
I Love the ocean and a fairly relaxed lifestyle, so I wondering if any of my American friends can give me some tips about which Texan cities might fit the bill.

Austin is where it's at, dollface.

So you're coming to see me?

Since I am from Dallas, I don't find it that special. If you live here, you will find that it is a city without an identity. Fort Worth has the stock yards and the whole cowtown thing, San Antonio has the Alamo, Houston has the gulf and major shipping hub. Austin is the music capital of the south with SXSW.

Dallas has the Kennedy assasination and the Cowboys. And if Romo can't pull his head out of Jessica Simpson's tits, we might not even have that.

My advice would be to move 20 south of Dallas, with me.

Also is there any quaint local (texan) customs I should be aware of.
Cheers,
Dragonfly.

Check out the islands off corpis christy, i built a house years ago on one of the islands and the people there were really nice.

P.S. I`ve traveled to almost every state in the U.S. and i still don`t know where to live, the most beautifull places to me are the keys in florida, aspen colorado is awsome, and pretty much anywhere on the great western divide, otherwise known as the rockies.

Avoid Houston, that is where most of the poor dislocated people from New Orleans went after Hurricane Katrina. Dallas is a major city know for the TV show from the 80's. Austin is supposed to be a happening city it is where the Real World (MTV) filmed when they spent a season in Texas.

If you like the accent a similar accent is found in most southern states.

Less than 10 years ago James Byrd Jr. was dragges and killed in Jasper ,TX by the KKK.
