We hear these things all the time and just assume they are words of wisdom until one really thinks about it or lives a while.

Here's some common sayings and beliefs that are not very truthful...

1. Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.

2. Do what you love and the money will follow.

3. Nobody ever died of a broken heart.

4. You can be anyone you want to be.

5. Invest for the long term and you will be fine (always said at the brink of the bear market by stock brokers who didn't do their homework)

6. Slow and steady wins the race.

7. You'll get an ulcer if you worry too much. (Actually caused by a bug)

8. The pen is mightier than the sword.

Any more you care to add to the list?

*...Your face will stay like that if you don't quit!

Do you think people made up these sayings because the honestly believed them to be true or are they more like white lies, brainwashing?

Where they ever true?

Perhaps they were just all excuses, for lack of something better to say? Though they mostly sound like threats.

Some ARE true....

A stitch in time saves nine

Look before you leap.

Etc. etc.

I think the difference is that stupid sayings were made up at one time or another to make people feel better when they're experiencing loss or difficulty.

While proverbs are simply sayings that express truisms in a succinct manner.

i think it varies upon situations.
in one situation the saying will be very true,
but in another it is more of a white lie.
i think.

Q: What did the potato say?
A: I think therefore I yam.

:biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1:

The way to tell the difference is: does the saying THREATEN, PLACATE and/or COMFORT?

Yes?

Throw it away! It's pablum!

(pablum = processed cereal for infants)

I tend to think that adage is true.

Hard work will bring success...
Speaking as someone who is no stranger to 60 hour work weeks this is bullshit! Sometimes all hard work gets you is exhausted. :12:

While proverbs are simply sayings that express truisms in a succinct manner. Okay, I can buy that.

If it doesn't kill you it only makes you stronger.

This one is a complete crock of macho motivational bullshit, mentally and physically. I've suffered a few hard physical knocks in this life and let me say: Spinal damage and dislocated limbs that leave the sufferer unable to roll from one side of a bed to another fail to engender a newfound sensation of strength and agility.
