Communal old school showers

just started at a new group of Y's in NJ. I've tried 3 of the 5 branches and was pleased to find they all have open showers. In one of the locations, they had a row of stalls along one wall. I was pleased to see that 2 guys use the stalls while 10 or so used the open showers, all naked with me. At another location, where the open shower seemed to primarily serve the pool, I was the only one to strip off my speedo. Guys were friendly and nobody seemed to avert their eyes as we chatted. While it was disappointing to not see other dicks, there is a bit of a thrill being the only one naked...it feels more exposed when my penis is the only one that a group of guys sees.

I also have noticed where open showers live alongside simple stalls most guys opt for open.

This makes sense.

The stall serves no purpose but privacy. But if you are a person willing to strip naked in the open at your locker (which remains the most common set up for men at gyms), chances are high you don’t really fear standing naked in the open as you shower.

Alternatively if you are uncomfortable getting naked in a locker room you probably won’t shower at gym.

The simple stall suits the sensibilities of people who do not use them who think it virtuous to “limit” exposure to communal nudity. Ridiculous.

The double chamber stalls where one can change and shower privately are at least rational because they make privacy possible from start to finish. The reason people don’t use those is because invariably they are gross.

Give me a clean open shower bay with good airflow where you can see what everybody is doing. Openness encourages cleaning norms and discourages all the gross stuff some people do in showers, things like pissing on floor, wanking, spitting goobers, leaving pile of shaved pube hair and god knows what else some do in there.

Privacy in gym showers protects and encourages unsanitary and bad behavior.

Unfortunately my gym doesn't have communal showers I have to go by another gym to enjoy the stream room and communal showers as well as the swimming pool. Don't know why all gyms don't have communal showers instead of stalls. There are some guys that don't use the showers at all and some who go to the shower dressed and strip off outside of the shower. I don't get it. Any way they get to see my dick when I get undressed, walk to the shower and when I'm drying off. Doesn't bother me to be the only one naked in the locker room. Ha ha

I like the open showers too. They seem to be slowly disappearing.

They are disappearing. Some places have preserved them after upgrading. But does anybody know of even a single new facility that has opened with them?

My gym, to my surprise, just began an “upgrade” that will among other things eliminate the open showers in favor of stalls... I had thought this not possible because the space was too narrow to be accessible to wheel chairs...but they are installing a second entrance / exit to the showers so the aisle can be a narrower “one-way”.

It will be interesting to see what changes this brings to locker room use, etc.

The Y in the city where I work is the only gym left that still has communal showers even after they remodeled the locker room a few years ago. I have mentioned in other threads how they sent out an online survey at the time to see what members wanted in the new locker room. I was very direct that I wanted them to keep the open shower room, and that if they got rid of it in favor of stalls, I would cancel my membership immediately. I guess other guys said the same thing because they kept them!

Sadly and ironically enough (because it was there as a student that I got comfortable showering with other guys in a communal shower), my university athletic centre in same city remodeled the entire athletic centre including the locker rooms and got rid of the communal shower with Bradley showers that they had always had there in favor of stalls only. They are awful! They are dirty, camped and moldy, have terrible water pressure, and ended all communication and camraderie. The last time I was there I noticed that fewer guys shower there than did when they had Bradley showers.

We need to show our support for gyms that continue to use them by taking out memberships there and refusing to buy memberships at gyms that don't have communal showers or have gotten rid of them. The almighty $ always speaks louder than words.

I do think that there are a lot of guys of all ages out there that still want communal showers based on what I have seen at my Y. While a majority of guys that use them are older, I have noticed more younger guys in their 20s using them as well as guys in their 30s and 40s. Lately I have noticed a surge of new members, and I have been pleasantly surprised to see that many of them are in the 20-40 year age range. As I mentioned in my previous post, the Y is the ONLY gym left in the city that still has communal showers, so there are plenty of other gyms in the city to go to if one wants privacy. My Y doesn't come cheap either unless a person has a subsidized membership, and if a member has a subsidized membership, they have to use the basic locker room (which does have a communal shower as well) rather than the plus locker room which costs about $70/month. This is the same price as most gyms in town that have private showers. In the communal shower at my Y, there is 1 stall with a curtain that was put in during the remodel, but it is hardly used unless the other 8 shower heads in the communal shower room are being fully used.

It was quiet last night at my Y, but I noticed when I was in the shower that a bodybuilder in his 30s was using the wet area for what seemed to be the first time. I have seen him many times on the gym floor before, but never in the plus locker room. He seemed very unsure about how things were done there. I noticed him watching me for guidance. He was going through a lot of extra effort to keep his towel around his waist in the wet area. I like most guys are completely naked the second I enter the wet area until the second I leave. I always walk to and from my locker naked as do most other guys. He did use the shower head right next to mine when we were both in the communal shower. He could have opted for the 1 stall that was unoccupied but didn't. I also noticed that he went to the hot tub naked after he saw me getting out of it naked after his shower. It's very rare that a guy doesn't uses the hot tub naked at my Y. He did however keep his towel on until the second he hit the water. I honestly thought he was going to keep it on in the hot tub! That would have been a first! LOL!

I do think that guys are starting to realize that something is lost when there is privacy in the locker room and shower. I have mentioned before in other threads that locker rooms that are relaxed about nudity have a different vibe than locker room that are uptight about it and the dynamics change. I have also mentioned before that in my experience, guys guards come down when they are naked together. Over the last 30 years that I have been using open showers, I have struck up friendly conversations with more guys than I can count while we were naked together in the locker room and communal shower. You just can't strike up a conversation with guys while working out, but you can in the locker room, steam room, hot tub, and open shower while naked. I would say that in my experience about 99% of guys are receptive to friendly conversation while naked. Just recently I have made friends with a guy half my age when we were naked together in the hot tub, steam room and open shower in the locker room at my Y. We are connected on social media because of it, and this is not rare. I'm still connected with several young guys on social media I met while we were both naked at the Y. The most recent guy actually found me on social media. How he did this I don't know because I just introduced myself by my first name. He's a cool guy, and when we bumped into each other naked in the locker room last week, we chatted away for a good half an hour. About a half an hour after I left the gym, he sent me a message through social media telling me how much he enjoyed talking to me and that he would see me around. Nudity creates bonding moments. There's a reason why communal bathing was common in Roman times and in the military. Those bonds were essential to societal and military units back then. I believe those bonds are more essential today in our modernized hectic world where people feel more isolated and disconnected than ever despite social media which seems to have caused more damage than good in my opinion because it's so empty and unfulfilling. OK, sermon over! ;)

I've been in similar locker rooms for decades, but never saw someone hard like that! Maybe a little engorged and looking huge.

Yep. In real locker rooms real men are soft or a bit chubbed which i think is a natural response to look “good sized” among the guys. Its gotta be many thousands of interactions Ive had w seeing a guy naked. In all that tine Ive seen one for certain erection and one “hard to deny”.

Seems to me the vast differences in genitals have the opposite effect. But, then again, i'm way on the small side.

I actually use a military fitness center. They did renovations a few years back and put in stalls in the new area (had communal before). They got rid of the old showers, but recently more guys are showering with the curtains open so anyone walking by can see. It's interesting to see how they put stalls in for privacy issues but now even younger guys aren't caring.

One younger guy always takes the first stall and will wait for it to be open to shower. He doesn't seem to be showing off. It's more of a "we're all men" thought process which is nice since you don't see that much anymore in the states

Completely agree with you.
Open showers are a natural way for guys to interact. Leaving everything outside, all the daily troubles and just being able to bond naturally.

Never come across any for years, except in German spas.
