Simple question to put forth here: do any of you wear compression shorts while you exercise? If so, what made you invest in them and what are the advantages that you've experienced since doing so?

That's all ...

Yes. Basically so no one sees your package while working out.

Can't you accomplish the same thing with mesh shorts, or by wearing stretchy briefs underneath?

I always thought compression shorts were worn for support, but also to keep leg muscles warm for runners. In any case, I'm just curious if anyone here has invested in the for those reasons, and whether or not they still use them.

When I strained my hamstring, I wore compression shorts for running and other exercises, but I don't like them. They do, indeed, do a good job of muscle support for your hamstrings, but they totally SUCK at ball support (about the only time I've been critical of something and used "balls" and "Suck" in the same sentence!) I dunno who invented them or why they're so popular, but all they do is press your nutsac IN and down, whereas a good ol' American JOCKSTRAP lifts your balls and pouches them properly. I say, "Let's get back to jockstraps, America!" Comp shorts are a poor substitute.

Having a stocky build, with big legs, chafing can be a problem. Comp shorts help with this problem. Like the maestro said they do squash your junk down which is also a problem with big legs. Wearing a jock under the chomp shorts usually fixed the problem.

Thanks for your comments; I've tried the compression shorts, and I just find them more of an annoyance than anything. My thighs are not thick by any means as I'm very lean all around, but, I have to agree: a jock does a better job and holding everything in place.

Not all compression shorts are created equal. I've had some that have no ball room and basically try to push my nuts back up inside and I have some that have sufficient ball room and offer little in the way of support. I have big nuts that ride high, so support is not an issue. If I'm performing an activity that involves jumping up and down I'll wear either comp shorts or a jock, depending on my mood. I like guy wear.

We wear compression shorts as outerwear quite often for practice or for cross campus runs, but I always wear a jockstrap underneath them.

Indeed, wearing a jock under comp shorts is a happy solution. But tell me, do the guys you hang out with ever actually wear jocks? One of the conditions I deplore about our culture currently is the absence or denigration of jockstrap usage.

I don't own any compression shorts but I do have some 'base layer' type stuff to keep warm. I still wear underwear underneath for support and to keep them cleaner for longer.

I wear either a jockstrap or 2xist pouch briefs when working out in the gym. I focus mostly on cardio at this stage, and have worked up to running several 5Ks each week, but am about to begin weight training in the new year.

When I've tried compression shorts, they're great for my legs. They feel wonderful...there. But they're physically painful for me. Squashing our man-parts can not be a good thing, and especially to the point at which it creates actual pain. Yes I've tried "the good ones" and they're slightly less painful...which isn't exactly high praise.

If I could find a jockstrap with sturdy spandex legs I'd be a very happy camper. Sadly, finding such a thing is unlikely.

You raise a good point: the gay male friends that I have all own a couple of jocks, but, they are typically worn for aesthetic purposes. In other words, they go from body to floor in 5 minutes once things get heavy with their partners. The straight male friends I have are not open enough to talk about their underwear choices, so I have no comparison on that front.

I've tried compression shorts. And good ones at that. I didn't really like them. Yes they are good for quad and hamstring support but they just mash up you dick and balls. I much rather wear a jockstrap at the gym. Awesome support where you need it and great range of movement.

I think quality has an effect; well for cyclists they do.

You can really tell the difference between good and bad quality ones.

Also; agreed on jock underneath for aiding cleanliness but comfort and high quality standalone for me.

I'm glad so many of you acknowledge that jockstraps do a better job that comp shorts, altho I guess the biker shorts might be somewhat better. What I cannot fathom is how comp shorts get manufactured with the design they have. I mean, do the designer NOT have balls? how can they make a pouch what doesn't lift your nuts to pouch 'em up?

I would expect the compression shorts in the Heidi Klum Collection to be flat. But some of the designers are (supposedly) male and, no matter how small, even they have shape down there.
