In my experience, I'd say it was actually a rite of passage. It happend a several times with my HS team and my college fraternity did it every year as an initiation rite. Oh yeah, also compared with my brothers.

for my friends, it is not such a big deal. We like to go camping, or travelling, and it is very hard not to "see" one another.
