That about the ODs, you are not in charge of when you will die. Take another breath and notice this.

As formerly suicidal person I learned this. You are however in charge of how to handle still being alive.

hmm i like the idea that i can jump out a high window whenever i want. makes the day a choice, not something i am forced to slog through. until someone/thing gets tired of janking my strings.

I will wrench on a car. I have a road course toy and a restoration project.

The shooting range works well too. I don't get angry there. I actually find the focus and routine of a good practice centering and calming.

When in doubt, masturbate.

Video games are my number one.
Laying down, listening to music for HOURS on end is another. Usually coupled with imagining my own stories to the music (which is why music is better in a language I don't fully understand).
Drawing and other creative outlets are an increasingly rare coping mechanism for myself.
Gorging (eating a LOT) is another... I do this when I'm over-stressed or extremely down.
Not eating - how I cope with gorging... >_>
Exercising or Biking (I don't lump them together, very different feelings for me) helps me cope with life in general.
To cope with pain inflicted by others, I tend to let my cat-claws out. >_>

Lately my coping mechanism is giving myself manicures. I have a new polish on order and I can't wait!(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ewgPhdujHCo/SquoDyNl_lI/AAAAAAAAAY4/_DcRPFTuQ4I/s400/black51b.jpg)

Otherwise most of my coping skills involve either being creative or enjoying something creative. I definitely love cooking and baking. I comb cooking magazines for inspiration and then spin a recipe or two off of whatever tickles my fancy. I'm also very much into photography and music. If whatever I'm coping with is so intense that it needs to be put into words I write.

I cant really say that I have any coping mechanisms that actually work... I have them, but they never seem to be strong enough to allow me to cope through the situation I'm in...

In fact the only coping mechanism that I have found to work is plain 'not entering situations'... lol... Makes for a boring life, but then rather a boring life than a stressful one I say... :)

I play a good amount of vidya games. I also listen to a large amount of music and try to play some too. I'm not really good at it but when i get particularly frustrated with something i play my guitar. Just something about the vibration of the strings and some of the tones that calms me down. That an cigs.

Other times i just try to focus my mind on the things i can change about the issue that's working on me.

in public.. i use my index finger to write words on the pad of my thumb. mostly bits of conversation picked up from passing human traffic.

I thought I was the only one who did that!!! Only I write on whatever surface is most comfortable - table, thigh, floor (with toes).

My other public one is scratching myself or digging my fingernails into my skin. The pleasure feeling calms me.

In public and home I attack myself with logic: eg. 'I get that you're stressed, but it's really not worth freaking out about. There's nothing scary about standing in a room with 3 other people in it. They are just people. They won't eat you'.

When at home I cuddle my cat, if she'll tolerate it.

I used to eat, but not anymore.

i am pretty loyal to my thumb, cuz i can kinda curl my hand up and scribble away.. is usually a public thing.

i also chew my lip and sometimes tug my hair  twitch power, twitch pride :tongue1:

It depends on the severity of the stress and where I happen to be at the moment. If I'm stressed at work, I just talk it out with one of the many pals who drop by and say hi. As I work in a bar, there's always plenty of people to talk with.

If I'm not at work, the most typical stress response is to isolate. If I have (or can easily procure) a benzo, I'll take it, or pour myself a drink (though I never drink before 5:00 anymore). If I'm in the right mindset, I'll write. Jerking off always works, too.

Though I generally hate talking on the phone, there are four or five people whom I'll call to blow off steam with or try to gain a different perspective from.

Though I know it doesn't help matters at all, I can be very avoidant; I have a marvelous capacity for doing everything except what I should be doing. It's not one of my more attractive traits, for sure.

I have been blessed enough control, foresight and love to never take stress out on friends or family. When stress is piling up I seem to easily 'go off' on people who are rude or inconsiderate.

Fortunately, martial arts has been there all these years to give me an outlet. That's important because nowadays the number of places where you can pound out aggression on someone else without litigation are getting fewer and fewer.
