Stupid behavior is the eventual undoing of any plan... good leadership or not.

Surely we can agree, there's always stupid behavior. According to your reasoning, then, no plan can ever amount to anything.

Is that what you're saying?

THese were the same people who were all wrapped around the axle in 2009 about what THEY called "death panels "

Now people who are NOT in the hospital, Not in ICU's who are NOT in a coma or at least unconscious Who are NOT on "life support" Whose Dr.s have NOT all concluded that the only way they will leave the hospital is in a body bag and the only question is when and how many MILLION will get spent keeping what is for all practical purposes a corpse "alive" for few extra days, maybe weeks when the outcome is NOT in doubt

The Chuck "pull the plug on Grandma" Grassley's of the world

Now they are "fuck them, sooner or later they are going to die anyway"

I guess it is one way to reduce MEDICAID spending

Is that what you're saying?

What I am saying is, that for a pandemic that is as virulent as this, that has a very long (5+ days, up to 14) incubation period where those infected can show no symptoms... Yes. The actions of a few stupid people can result in rules and regulations that not only endanger the more susceptible population, but also keep everyone indoors in perpetuity, because once you think you've beaten it, there is one holier-than-thou asshole who will throw caution into the wind, happen to be a Typhoid-Mary carrier, not give a shit and be tired of staying home, and start the cycle all over again..

I am not saying it (lockdown) can't be done, but it can't be done in a way that people are going to like. You'll need an army to enforce summary judgement on the spot, like in "The Crazies" in order to stop the spread.

I am afraid the best we can hope for is to doggie-paddle as we are until there is a vaccine / cure.

It's sad, because he was told it was a hoax by only ONE NEWS OUTLET.

I didn't think hip young people watched that ONE news outlet... Again, that can go back to stupid for not doing one's due diligence and research. It is July. This is not March.

The article you quote does not specify where the victim got the "news" that the virus was a "hoax". I am sure peer pressure, and "not wanting to miss out" played a role in the decision to attend.

Most people would say that states in mostly the south and west who were so so "It's blue state problem" smug 6 weeks ago are now HARDLY "doggy paddling"

THere will also be a LOT of overlap in groups, the group/s that to this day will not wear a mask and want to be shoulder to shoulder and swapping spit among other bodily fluids at bars, clubs and other venues are the ones most likely to REFUSE to get vaccinated so there goes that "herd immunity" that we do not even know for sure is a real thing with this

The "common cold" IS a virus and there is no vaccine and no such thing as "herd immunity"

Just sayin

Coronavirus spikes in Battleground states force trump to act like he cares

Donald Trump grabbed headlines Saturday for merely wearing a mask during a visit to a military hospital, the first time the president has donned the precaution that health officials have recommended for months. Trump flew by helicopter to visit Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he met with wounded service members and medical professionals specializing in COVID-19 treatment. “I love masks in the appropriate locations,” Trump told reporters at the White House before taking off, according to NPR, adding that he thinks “it’s a great thing to wear a mask” in a hospital “where you’re talking to a lot of soldiers and people that, in some cases, just got off the operating tables.”

“I’ve never been against masks, but I do believe they have a time and a place,” Trump claimed, despite the fact that he has mocked mask-wearers—including presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden and a White House correspondent—throughout the coronavirus outbreak, which was officially declared a global pandemic in mid-March. “I just don’t want to wear one myself,” Trump said in early April, even as his administration recommended wearing one. His decision not to publicly wear one in May, he said, was so as not to give “the press the pleasure of seeing it.” He has refused to wear a face covering at public events like campaign rallies and news conferences. Those close to him told the Associated Press that Trump worried wearing a mask would portray weakness and, in drawing attention to the pandemic, distract from the message of economic recovery he has continued to tout.

Though Trump is finally taking this precaution now, he is months too late—and is likely motivated because the virus is ravaging states vital to his reelection chances and Biden is beating him in the polls. Trump’s visible shift comes amid surges in COVID-19 infections and deaths across the country, especially in Arizona, Texas, and Florida, which have reported record-breaking virus tallies over the past few weeks. The United States saw more than 68,000 new cases on Friday, breaking the single-day record for the seventh time in 11 days, the New York Times reported. On Sunday, Florida reported 15,300 new coronavirus cases over a 24-hour period, “a record for one day anywhere in the U.S.,” according to the Miami Herald.

The staggering numbers have prompted even Republican governors who resisted mask guidance to come around, the Washington Post notes. With cases and hospitalizations spiking in Arizona last month, Governor Doug Ducey allowed local governments to mandate face coverings, a request they had reportedly been making for several weeks. Greg Abbott recently mandated masks for most of Texas—a dramatic reversal for the GOP governor who in April blocked local officials from imposing a penalty or fine on anyone not wearing a mask.

I mean they have 0 shame. His campaign thinks him wearing a mask for the first time HALF A YEAR into the pandemic after Millions of exposures and 100k+ deaths is celebratory? Fucking ghouls. They championed the politicization of basic safety measure while thousands died. He and his supports laughed at other leaders wearing masks months ago. They provided no leadership at the top because "it made them look bad" and thought ignoring it is somehow better.

And he's out golfing again this weekend like some trash

Now that they’ve got Trump in a mask, would they consider progressing to the use of a muzzle? Like the mask, a muzzle would be in the best interest of protecting others.

Most people would say that states in mostly the south and west who were so so "It's blue state problem" smug 6 weeks ago are now HARDLY "doggy paddling"

They are suffering now, simply because the problem that afflicted the "Blue States" back in March and April were the result of repeated infections from overseas carriers to airport workers and eventually their families / close contacts, and the resultant community spread, which hadn't been realized outside those Blue States commensurate with the incubation period. Once the infection was able to "community spread" from airport workers / returning Americans / hotel workers, the hope of containment was over. It may have been slowed, but as long as domestic travel was not a crime punishable by death, the risk of spread would continue. People travel. Who are you to say I can't go on a ski vacation? What? Sickness? Show me proof!!!! It only took a few to travel from New York to other areas of the country to bring it to outlying areas which didn't see it before. And there it incubated. HIV was in New York in 1970. It didn't show it's face for ten years, yet was able to spread unimpeded because nothing was known about it.. Same for this disease, albeit on a more compressed time-frame.

My opinion, the hope of "containing" HIV was gone before its presence was discovered. I feel the same problem with this virus, in that it's been ahead of science and government from the get-go..

As General Starky said in "The Stand", "Our one shot at containing this flew out the window when Campion stopped to get his first take-out hamburger." I recommend "The Stand" if you haven't read it.

For those in the "south" and "west" (sans the Pacific States), their communities weren't exposed to the community spread as originally occurred in the "blue" states, but yet they:
1/ Clamored to be released from a lock-down that appeared to not be needed by the amount of sick.
2/ Didn't realize that the bug could already be in their community, spreading unchecked.

Many won't realize danger until it's too late.

Once the word is out there is sickness around, everyone with means will run.. And I am sure that those who thought they were escaping the sickness just carried it with them and transmitted to tose they passed on their way and into the "uncontaminated zone" which were re-opened because they didn't see cases.

We knew it was in China in December. It took three months to show up in significant numbers to realize that it had already spread into the general population. At that point it was too late.

Just sayin

And those who won't wear are those who pretty much guarantee this doesn't burn itself out in the short term.

You don't want to live in a society that can eradicate this in 4 weeks, that implies summary executions of many, simply because testing and tracing takes too long... And then there will always be a risk it comes back...

I used to thing that the scenarios in apocalyptic films was bullshit. Based on current human behavior, I need to rethink my position.

For the viewers at home the “we” is the Trump Administration that chose to deny it was a threat for two months until reality forced them to acknowledge reality. It is not the fault or the duty of citizens to know all the threats that could impact the nation. It pays billions for the intelligence services to know that are report that up the chain of command which it did. Alas it was ignored. FULL STOP.

White House seeks to discredit Fauci as coronavirus surges

The White House is seeking to discredit Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's leading infectious disease expert, as President Donald Trump works to marginalize him and his dire warnings about the shortcomings of the U.S. coronavirus response.

In a remarkable broadside by the Trump administration against one of its own, a White House official said Sunday that "several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things." The official gave NBC News a list of nearly a dozen past comments by Fauci that the official said had ultimately proven erroneous.

Among them: Fauci's comments in January that the coronavirus was "not a major threat" and his guidance in March that "people should not be walking around with masks."

It was a move more characteristic of a political campaign furtively disseminating opposition research about an opponent than of a White House struggling to contain a pandemic that has killed more than 135,000 people, according to an NBC News tally.
