the stats are from his book - page 12. He has a whole biblography in the back of his book that talks about where he gets his info from. While I'm not hooked on what Shettles has to say, I do think that timing can have an influence on it. Both of the times I've concieved are when I've had intercourse right on or near my ovulation date. I'm pregnant with my second boy. We were actually trying for a girl the second time around, but we had a passionate night of sex too close to the ovulation date and voila...a boy.

While I know that no method is 100% accurate and some experts are skeptic as to whether you can choose the sex of your baby or not, I personally don't see any harm in trying if so many people seem to get what they want out of it.

Here's a few sites giving both sides of gender selection:

I'm probably a late reply on this buddy but I wanted to assure you that your size is not a problem. There's plenty of semen inside no matter what it looks like. My wife and I are expecting no. 3 very soon. I'm a very large boy. Don't listen to the wives tales. It is true that you want to have sex close to ovulation but if you're at it 4 or 5 times a week you're bound to hit it. It's not uncommon for couples to try 3 or more months before conceiving. If you get close to the year mark with no luck then it's time to talk to the docs about a fertility check (both of you). good luck! BTW, we've got a boy and a girl so this ones a bonus regardless of gender.
