Well no, but no one here is talking about learning how to play an instrument skillfully to entertain people, either, are they? As far as I can tell, so far people mostly seem to be interested in sex and massage and dressing sexy, which can be found at any bunny ranch, very little studying or skills required.

As far as modern day equivalents, Belle du Jour had a doctorate and was a very well educated woman, which took many years of study. The demand for her company had to do in part with how well-educated and interesting she was, which seems to me to be a fair comparison. The interest in her company seems to be quite similar to the interest men had in the geishas described in Memoirs of a Geisha.

Well I'm just throwing that out there. You mention that you've read up on a lot more of this. I know that Geishas study for many many years and start the process as children to learn talents and rituals. That obviously can't be compared when you think about it.

I understand exactly. I am often typing slowly in order not to wake anyone.

I understand that at one point geisha were sort of like modern day ballerinas that you hung out with after they performed and then sometimes they would have sex with you, but it seems sort of like the same base exchange prettied up because the man selected a more talented woman than the one at the bunny ranch. Or like famous celebrities that you paid to hang out with you. I know that it could definitely become more since a man could choose to keep a particular geisha as a kept woman, so there is definitely more than just sex going on with the relationship sometimes, but I'm still not enamoured of the idea of it.

I'd rather imagine being a rock star who was only paid for my skill and who gets to sleep with whomever I want, without sex being a part of my job.

A geisha is supposed to be able to choose who she wants to have sex with, too. I just prefer modern times when we have sexual harassment laws because when money and power and sex mix, the results don't always come down in a woman's favor as far as choice is concerned. Women in the past didn't have many options when it came to controlling her own destiny and I think being a geisha was one of the best choices that a woman had to live her own life. Now? I wouldn't be a geisha in modern times.
