sounds insulting to compare a geisha to an escort.
and my Firefly-nerd is all "oh, no you didn't!"
Well no, but no one here is talking about learning how to play an instrument skillfully to entertain people, either, are they? As far as I can tell, so far people mostly seem to be interested in sex and massage and dressing sexy, which can be found at any bunny ranch, very little studying or skills required.
As far as modern day equivalents, Belle du Jour had a doctorate and was a very well educated woman, which took many years of study. The demand for her company had to do in part with how well-educated and interesting she was, which seems to me to be a fair comparison. The interest in her company seems to be quite similar to the interest men had in the geishas described in Memoirs of a Geisha.
She was clever:
Magnanti grew up in Florida. She graduated from the private Clearwater Central Catholic High School in 1992 and entered university at the age of 16, going on to receive a B.S. in 1996 from Florida State University, where she was a National Merit Scholar. She later studied for a master's degree in genetic epidemiology and Ph.D. in forensic science from the University of Sheffield in England. The Ph.D. thesis was submitted in 2003 and doctorate awarded in 2004.
This was her thesis:
"Macrobioinformatics: the Application of Informatics Methods to Records of Human Remains". University of Sheffield.
