I used to just go to the gym to work out, shower, change and get out. I am now one that "covers up". While I don't go so far as to wear a towel "towel dance" while I am trying to get my underwear on, these days I do know as said above there are camera phones around and guys that seem to get off on seeing other guys naked (these are men I don't want to see me naked guys!). I've also noticed more leers in the past few years that I don't appreciate. So call me one of the cover up guys! That's me! If that comes across as "stuck up" to some people, than maybe YOU shouldn't be noticing that I have a towel on instead of being naked for YOUR enjoyment and not mine.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

You know... as long as the guys who insist on covering up don't give a shit about what I do, I don't give a shit about what they do.

It is an interesting situation with camera phones; I've called out a couple guys who seemed poised to "make a call" [this is that perv maneuver for pretending to scrutinize your phone directory, but you're actually taking pictures -- these guys get caught out because they're not aware that the other party can actually hear the sound the phone makes when it takes a picture] in our locker room and they've immediately put it away and apologized. I'm flattered, yeah. But at the same time, I don't want to see my cock on the internet.

as has been said, some people care, some don't.

beautiful california day today. had my shorts in my car, but started the day in jeans. so i changed into my shorts in the parking lot. was wearing undies, so figured I wasn't showing anything you don't see on tv or in an ad, right? except I'm not ripped like dudes in CK/Armani underwear ads :)

I dont think that camera phones would have caused men to be affraid to undress in a locker room. It seems to me that this is something deeper, perhaps homophobia.

To me, it has always been part of being a man to have the courage to undress in a locker room. "I am a man and not affraid to show it". Remember that a locker room is where men really compete. When they undress they reveal their penis and like it or not, it is compared.

Many years ago, I had read an interesting article about homophobia. In a football (soccer) game, you'll often see the players kiss/embrace after a goal. There is abosolutely no homosexual connotation about this because in sports, men are seen as strongly heterosexual and have no fear of being tagged as "homo". Similarly, in locker rooms, they have not affraid to show their body and even joke about other team member's bodies because it is all in a very manly sport environment which suspends homophobic inhibitions which are normally in full force.

To me, this is a bit like pornography where the director forces the male actors to take unnatural poses to ensure their penis is always out of camera's view. This bugs me because it unnatural and you can clearly spot the efforts to hide the dick. So in the end, I end up concentrating on those efforts instead of the rest of the movie.

Similarly, guys who go out of tyheir way to hide their gear attract more attention because of the trouble they go through to ensure nobody gets a glimpse of their gear.
Same for muslims who take showers in white underwear. Are they aware that they aren't hinding anything in their wet briefs that clearly show they are circumcised ? By wearing their underwearf in shower, they actually attract attention to themselves. If they were naked, they would just be another anonymous male body.

I am not against a few shy people not wanting to show their equipment. But I am concerned when this trend catches on and it makes you feel out of place to be naked in a men's locker room. If there is one place where men can be naked it is in a men locker room.

I'll put my reply in caps between your response. In a few instances you are correct. But for most people, including myself, I don't "compare" myself to other guys when I'm at a gym working out, I could care less.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF CAMERA PHONES AROUND THESE DAYS IN MENS LOCKER ROOMS. I DON'T WANT TO BE A PART OF SOMEONES "PHONE PIC" COLLECTION, NOR DO I WANT TO BE PUT ON THE INTERNET BY SOMEONE ELSE. IF I CHOOSE TO DO SO, LIKE I DID HERE, IT'S MY CHOICE TO DO SO.

A FEW YEARS AGO I WOULDN'T HAVE THOUGHT TWICE ABOUT WALKING TO THE SHOWER NAKED, SHOWERING, DRYING OFF, WALKING BACK NAKED AND STANDING AROUND TALKING TO OTHERS SOMETIMES WHILE I GOT DRESSED. I DON'T ANYMORE. I DON'T COMPETE WITH ANYONE AND I DON'T COMPARE WITH ANYONE'S EITHER. THEY COULD HAVE A SMALL UNIT OR A BIG UNIT AND I REALLY DON'T CARE. TO ME THE GYM IS NOT A FREEBIE FOR SOMEONE TO STARE AT ME IN WAYS I DO NOT APPRECIATE.

I AGREE HERE. IF I WAS A PART OF SAID SOCCER TEAM I'D BE JUST LIKE THEM. IT ISN'T HOMOPHOBIA ON MY PART; IT'S UNWANTED STARES FROM GUYS I WANT NO PART OF. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION I'VE HAD TO STARE DOWN SOMEONE CHECKING ME OUT A FEW YEARS AGO. I'M NOT CHANGING HERE FOR THEIR ENJOYMENT.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LOOKING SO HARD????

Similarly, guys who go out of tyheir way to hide their gear attract more attention because of the trouble they go through to ensure nobody gets a glimpse of their gear.

ONLY TO THOSE WHO SHOULDN'T BE TRYING TO STEAL A GAWK IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Same for muslims who take showers in white underwear. Are they aware that they aren't hinding anything in their wet briefs that clearly show they are circumcised ? PLENTY OF CIRCUMCISED AND UNCIRCUMCISED MALES AROUND WHERE I LIVE. IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IF THEY ARE MUSLIM OR NOT. THERE ARE SOME IN MY GYM THAT ARE NOTHING LIKE WHAT YOU DESCRIBE ABOVE.

I am not against a few shy people not wanting to show their equipment. But I am concerned when this trend catches on and it makes you feel out of place to be naked in a men's locker room. If there is one place where men can be naked it is in a men locker room.

I DON'T FEEL OUT OF PLACE IN A MENS LOCKER ROOM. I AM JUST MORE AWARE OF HOW MANY GUYS 'HANG AROUND' LOCKER ROOMS SIMPLY TO CHECK OUT WHAT THEY CONSIDER A HOT UNIT OR GUY. I DON'T CARE IF SOMEONE STEALS A GLANCE OR WHATEVER; WHAT I DON'T APPRECIATE IS STARING OR GAWKING OR THAT 'PICK UP' LOOK SOME HAVE ON THEIR FACE.

Hmmm, I don't cover up cause I'm uncomfortable with my package... (tho, the rest of the body needs a bit of work... damn the beers)
... I do it cause people (the rest of society) is uncomfortable with my body.
.. Oh, that, and the damned cold.... bloody Canadian winters..
