Javierdude22: Well...the smartest thing any government can do after a terrorist attack that demands rtreat is actually retreating of course...

Oi...I was never for invading Iraq...but now that there IS a coalition, let them deal with it responsably and fix what they broke...orm intended to fix.

The most irresponsable thing Spain can do right now is leaving. But Holland might just do the same thing in July, so ive heard.

Irresponsible ? 90% of the population was AGAINST the war. The Spanish government would finally have a moral legitimacy ! ... They'd act responsibly for the first time in a year !

No Raal, it really isnt. The Spanish government should have listened when they made the initial decision to be part of the coalition or not. They said A, now they have to say B.

With that I mean that the next government cannot just retreat now, without any good follow up (and there will be now follow up). This is something you see in developing countries a lot as well. A mayor (with way too much power) sets in motion a new policy to promote development, after 3 years he gets replaced by another mayor, who, instead of looking what has been done and if it is possible to continue that, stops everything and does it all over again, mostly not very diffrenet from his predecesor.

Therefore, just because Spain has a new government, doesnt give them carte blanche to undo everything the previous governmnet did, and wash their hands in innocence and pointing fingers that the PP did it all wrong. Governments arent representations of the partys wishes, they are representations of Spain and its policy. So they should remedy what the Partido Popular did wrong, as best as they can. And in my view, pulling out and leaving the country to rot is not the best option.

Javierdude22: Just an update:

Seems like they will retreat definately now that the Left party of Zapatero won.

It turns out Al Qaida hoped their terror attack would result in this. They planned the attack on purpose 3 days before the elections so the ruling party would be blamed for the deaths, and be cst out of government right after that. Emotions are fresh and strong after 3 days, logically.

They hoped the left would win, because they foresaw that they would call back the Spanish troops.

And thats the thing that gets to me, that we are sending out a message that killing people through trrorist activities pays off. It will only continue this way...I hope the Sànish govt. will seriously think about what is best.

I am also pretty scared for Holland. Spain had 1300 soldiers in Iraq, we have 1200. The only thing is that they were more conspicuous about it. But...doesnt mean they dont have their eye on us either.

Just came out that the videotape which featured the responsable Al Qaida chief was taped in either Brussel or Amsterdam.

Hei-Ho...Holland, the place where even terrorists roam free...

SpeedoGuy: All:

I'm a very interested reader of this conversation.

My sympathies to the citizens of Spain in general and Madrid in particular for the horror they have suffered.
