U.K. politician suggests 6 p.m. curfew for men following suspected abduction, murder of Sarah Everard

Someone in the UK suggested a 6pm curfew for men in response to the recent murder of a woman.

A lot of people are up in arms about this. I'm not. We put a lot of the responsibility on preventing sexual assault and gendered violence on women. As a society we tell women to be careful all the time about what they're wearing, who they're with, where they are, etc. That is a big burden to put on someone just so they can exist safely in society. That isn't fair.

I don't think a 6pm curfew is a good idea. I do think that men need to take some responsibility in preventing sexual violence and I find the utter unwillingness of men to do that as extremely unsettling.

What do you guys think?

Silly idea let's be honest.

Raised by Jenny Jones of the Greens

"Silly idea"? One of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard, clearly anti male, didn't she want to be London Mayor/Mayoress at one time, yeah good luck with that!

Speak for yourself Wally. Your allegation of "utter unwillingness of men" is offensive to an awful lot of people.

To give some context, which Cressida Dicks our head of the London Met Police has been trying to do, 2 of the 176 women murdered in the UK last year were victims of sex and murder attacks by men they didn't know. 70% of the women murdered were killed in their own homes and the majority by men they knew very well, which makes the curfew comment even more facile.

I think this has been given a lot more air time than it deserves, news sites and papers have picked up on it and put it in headlines to provoke a response. That's what the media does, it gets people angry because it sells. They do it all the time with stuff like this.

What do you propose?

Not sure. I think it would require people much more knowledgeable about rape and sexual assault to answer that question.

The only thing I can say is that it would be a good start if men as a group didn't immediately recoil anytime someone said we should teach men not to rape.

I think some snowflakes are melting their balls off over this, and they don't understand that she wasn't being literal in the first fucking place.

Think with the head on your shoulders, fellas. Not the one dangling in front of your asshole.

Oh, while we're on the subject...

It was a fuckin COP that got arrested for murdering this woman.

Policing is still a job done mostly by men. Prosecuting and convicting violent criminals is still done mostly by men.

Men need to hold men accountable.

This is it. There needs to be a societal change in accountability for how men treat women. Of course the vast majority of us are appalled by the actions of murderers and rapists. It's not that kind of disgust that we're missing in our world - it's the idea that it is acceptable to treat women as second-class citizens and that's how it's supposed to be. That's normal. Expecting women to break eye contact, forcing social situations where the man is in charge and the woman should be quiet, dismissing women as equals. Raping and killing women is easy to paint as a rare crime that we can all be horrified by, but the holding of women down through small measures ends up being a big part of the picture: When we think of women as being not quite as good as men, even if there's no murdering in our plans, we devalue women. That overall devaluation leads to increased danger that no woman deserves.

Perfectly put.

I view women in general in a similar way to how most people view Covid-19. Utterly horrible, vaguely terrifying and to be avoided at all costs.

Clearly society would of better off and women safer if more took this attitude.

Fingers crossed you never become a parent, ever.

I would never be selfish or stupid enough to actively choose to bring a new life into this world. As for adoption, well, I'm self-aware enough to know what a burden it would be.

Good enough for me.

Anyone who would describe an entire group of people the way you just described women doesn't need to have an influence on anyone still developing. Whoever raised you, well... Too bad they hadn't come to the conclusion you did about having kids.

To clarify, I see men in the same way, mostly for the same reason as I see women in such a way - they are humans, and humans tend to be malignant cunts. But yes, we shouldn't dare to generalise about any group of people. I'm sure many of those Nazis are perfectly decent people, no need to paint them with one brush.
