well, in CA, the reaction to NC was "what else is new?" we expected NC to be like this. i am proud the Democratic party meets in Charlotte NC for its convention. what better place to take the Obama battle for equal rights than to the center of ignorance? again, this demonstrates Obama's courage. he could much more easily have had the convention in his home city of Chicago. but he is taking the challenge and taking to the Tarheel state. what an appropriate moniker for such a state.

From Facebook:

  • I believe in traditional biblical marriage:
  • 1 man & his sister
  • 1 man & his dead brother wife
  • 1 man & one woman and her servants
  • 1 man & his rape victim
  • 1 man & many women
  • 1 man & 700 women + 300 concubines
  • 1 man & 1 woman + her slaves
  • 1 soldier & his virgin prisoner
  • just not 1 man & 1 man, THAT would be immoral

Guys look! - the term marriage is emotive! it means so much to people.
Surely some wording can be found that would please all sides!
Can the same rights that pertain to hetrosexual couples also be extended to other types of relationships? thats the real test and challenge to us all!

it's North Carolina... what do you expect from a southern state? I'm surprised it's not illegal to be gay in Texas.

Time and again, your bigotry shines through. Get out of your tiny little bubble, and try meeting new people, once in a while.

As for the marriage thing, you'll notice that even those who are against "gay marriage" legalization are *not* in favor of discrimination against gay couples. It's the word marriage that is the big problem, and the fact that some legislative bodies are trying to "shove it down their throats," instead of lettign it happen in its own time.

rights don't just happen on their own time.... they have to be fought for.... So sorry if i remind you that your not giving me my rights and that there is a separation of church and state... i don't want to get married in a church, i just want to get married.

and for my comment about the south.... well i stick by it because the vast majority of the south is still anti gay.

You're absolutely correct. Rights are inherent. Society's acceptance of those rights, however, must unfortunately grow. and, government can *affirm* those rights, but not force their acceptance on the general public.

The OP asked the reason for the backlash against gay marriage. How do you feel when you realize that something is being forced upon you?

Most people rail against that use of force.

As I suggested earlier, consider getting out of your little bubble, and meeting some of the people you're bad mouthing.

We're not all the bigots that you seem to believe. Remember, also, that stereotypes go both ways. ;)

It's not the word "marriage" that bothers those against same sex marriage. Even if they called it civil commitment those most opposed to homosexuals would still be against seeing gay couples receive full Federal recognition and benefits that are given to married couples. If it were just about the use of a word then where are all the anti marriage equality people demanding the government to just extend the same benefits to those in domestic partnerships?
Federal Marriage Benefits Denied to Same-Sex Couples | Nolo.com

Here is the first section of an article from the Family Research Council's homepage(won't link to it since they have been declared a hate group)
The Top Ten Harms of Same-Sex "Marriage"

http://www.frc.org/img/activedit/BC11A02.jpgSome advocates of same-sex "marriage" scoff at the idea that it could harm anyone. Here are ten ways in which society could be harmed by legalizing same-sex "marriage." Most of these effects would become evident only in the long run, but several would occur immediately.
Immediate Effects

  • Taxpayers, consumers, and businesses would be forced to subsidize homosexual relationships.

It's not about marriage to people like this. It's about their hatred of the idea that homosexuality is considered normal.

North Carolina isn't the 'typical Southern state'. It like Georgia, Florida, and Maryland is home to many non-native residents. Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham are both non traditional Southern cities where you might be hard pressed to find a native. This is a case where the religious and closed-minded won out.

There are a couple of Southern states like NC that are trending more away from the typical idiocy banner associated with the region.

Absolutely correct. Remember in 2008 NC swung Democratic so it definitely isn't as hard-right as people want to peg it.

When it comes to gay marriage, i think it's easier to look at a State like NC and say "oh it's Southern. They are ignorant and backwards" when that is simply not the case. Every state is diverse and a State like NC is no difference. People I think dont like the result of the that Amendment referendum and want to rush to criticize. While I'm sure some people (as in EVERY state) are what people assume they are, i dont think it's a "Southern" thing.

If it were a "southern" thing, how could an overwhelmingly liberal state like California also vote for a constitutional ban? If it were a southern thing, how could a "southern" state like Maryland vote to allow marriage?

Gay marriage not only has momentum in the US but will soon become law in Illinois, Rhode Island and Minnesota. the posts above are laughable.

The backlash in the US seems to have died down, and it's not even an issue this midterm election. This seems like progress. The bigger the social change, the bigger the backlash.

Meanwhile, in France, tens of thousands of protesters recently took to the streets of Paris to demonstrate against gay marriage.

Here's a video in Spain to make your day:

Isn't imposing reduced civil rights to a minority a form of discrimination?
