The urologist keeps finding microscopic blood in my urine and wants me to do a cytoscopy, where they insert a small plastic tube with a camera on it up through your penis into your bladder (to check for bladder cancer, etc). Apparently they can do this while you are awake with a numbing gel, but I told him the only way I'm doing this is if they sedate me. Has anyone else gone through this procedure, and how miserable was it? Initially he did an X-ray and CT scan to rule out kidney stone/other causes, but now he wants to do this....

I had it two times, mainly so I could have bladder distension. Where they pump fluid into the bladder to stretch it. I think the main reason they put me into twilight/amnesiac state is because that procedure itself is uncomfortable. All I remember is a burning of the propofol in my arm and then wheeled off -- remember absolutely zero of either procedure.

I am not sure any anesthesia is necessary at all with just an exploratory cystoscopy.

I've had it done twice. I was awake both times. The nurse squeezes a gel into your penis to make it numb. That can take your breathe away as it is cold! The first time was easy, didn't feel a thing. The second time was a little uncomfortable, but its over a done with quickly. It's actually a fairly easy procedure.

Yeah I think having some lidocaine gel in the urethra is probably good. But unless having your bladder blown up like a balloon or something "cut out", I think just the local gel is fine.

I have had two, both without sedation right in the doctor's office. I was told to go into he room, strip from the waist down and put a paper covering over my lower half. the doctor walked in, took off the covering, grabbed my penis, and put some numbing gel inside. He told me to lie down and he inserted the camera. I didn't feel a thing. It went into my bladder, which he declared," pristine" and then he slowly withdrew. He said," I'm going past your prostate; you might feel something." I did; it made me tingle with a bit of pleasure. After that, I was on my way - about ten minutes in all. He did say that I would experience a stinging for a few urinations afterward, which I did. But, having been warned, I knew what to expect. I drove myself home and everything was fine. If you have sedation, you have to have a driver and will take up much more time recovering from the sedation than from the procedure. Now, if the procedure is for a rigid cystoscopy, then you need to be put out, but it looks like you will have a flexible one, which is fine if done without sedation.

Rigid cystoscopy. A rigid cystoscopy is where a cystoscope that does not bend is used. You're either put to sleep for the procedure or the lower half of your body is numbed while it's carried out.

I have had three of those Cystoscopes, never with sedation always with the numbing gel. Only discomfort is when the scope goes by the prostate, but I am well over 70 with the typical enlarged prostate that closed down the urethra a bit.
I did experience some stinging and a bit of blood for the next 12 hours on urination. But that went away with no subsequent issues.
Just get it done, they actually know what they are doing and you will be fine.
I certainly rather have that instead of a colonoscopy!!!

I have had microscopic blood in my urine for a long time. I have had several of these procedures and being threatened with another. So far the docs have never found anything to be alarmed about. Each time I was up in stirrups, stripped from the waist down and covered with a little paper drape. I remember the last time better than the others because my nurse, who was quite grim looking at the beginning, smiled a lot after she finished wiping some cold liquid all over my dick. I tried my best not to think about what she was doing but I could feel it come to life a bit as she kept wiping it with that liquid. There was some mild stinging some time or other when the doc inserted the instrument. I would never wish to be put out for any procedure if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

How old are you? Do you work out? And, in particular, do you run (street or treadmill)?

Microscopic blood in urine could simply be the result of an active lifestyle.

Yeah, I've read that some people just have microscopic blood in the urine without a known cause. I'm hoping that's all it is with me, because I'd rather not have this procedure done if I can help it. The doc already did a cytology screen of my urine and didn't find any cancer cells.

I'm 40, 6'1 and 140. I don't work out or run (though I know I should), but do occasionally use the treadmill. Back in 2015 a physical also found blood in urine, but when I retested a week or so later it wasn't there. At the time they said I may have just been dehydrated (or from exercise), but the past few times they've found blood at each urine screen, a couple months apart.

I have not had a cytoscope up there but I have had a urinary catheter which also needs to be inserted via the penis and past the prostate. It isn't very comfortable going in but not painful - the numbing gel sees to that.

They'll be reluctant to give you a general anaesthetic for this as a general has risks. It's obviously your option if you press for it, but I wouldn't.
