I saw this on BBC news yesterday. He's always being arrested in the U.S but he seems to be welcomed everywhere else.
There was a tv documentary on him about a year ago when he came to London. When I first heard of him I thought the nudity was just a gimmick to get noticed but now I don't think so.He takes some great photos!
Where do you leave your clothes/cash/keys if you volunteer for one of these shoots? It would be a massive operation to arrange lockers for 18,000 people.

He has five HBO specials, globe trotter he is. Spener's an all around good person. He exudes positivity and good nature. He gives off this feeling of innocence. Adorable <3

The models are recommended not to keep any valuables on them. ;)

Isn't it grand to just bring out the voyeur in people the world over? Everyone everywhere you go wants to get naked for you by the thousands.

Pretty fantastic, and beautiful to see a sight like that from such a distance, on such a grand scale! If only Americans weren't such unwarranted prudes.

(But yeah - the first thing I thought was, "Where did they all leave their clothes??)

Heather, a friend of mine who lives in Edinburgh has been in one of Tunick's nude group photo projects (in London, I think), and had planned to travel to be in another one. I'll have to ask him about the logistics.

He said it was not as fun as it may have looked - cold, and uncomfortable holding some of those poses for relatively long periods of time.

"Art." Right. Guy's in a rut, big-time.

You are correct. lol But don't you think it's fascintating, to just travel the world and have people approach you, strangers, and say "Can I get naked for you?" The insanity is gloriously contagious.

He said it was not as fun as it may have looked - cold, and uncomfortable holding some of those poses for relatively long periods of time.

Your friend has never done any modelling, has he? :) You think any hot girl on the beach, twisting her hips out so her ass looks big, sucking her stomach in so you can't tell she had a glass of water that morning, and sticking out her chest and lips is comfortable?! She certainly looks pretty though, doesn't she? Models are poorly under appreciated and put their bodies through hell for the sake of eye candy.

And that's what visual art is; eye candy.

That car accident you can't turn away from, that picture you have hanging on your livingroom wall that you like looking at, that favorite porn tape you have......it's all designed art.

I sort of agree with BD here. I won't be as big a condescending prick and imply that I know the definition of "art" more than the artist... but it does seem to me the whole naked bodies lying on things is kind of played-out by now.

I'm sure the mayor of Mexico city, who had to fight the president to make this happen, Spencer's crew, the newscasters present, and each person there watching and standing naked for the picture...would disagree with you entirely. It's easy to be cynical about a situation if you detach yourself from it and fail to empathize. To each his own.

Not really. What you're describing is more decoration than art.

Of course a crowd of people in their starkers, all getting goose bumps while waiting for some guy to get his exposure settings right, ain't all that decorative, either.

Who pissed in your cheerios, hm?

I like Tunick's work and appreciate the great lengths he himself has to go to in order to make these photo shoots a reality. There are permits and cajoling of prospective photees and risk of arrest. The wonderful thing about Tunick is that he accepts all individuals regardless of age or body shape or size--he truly sees the body as an object to be photographed and as something of beauty.

There have been at least 3 documentary things (on cable channels) on Tunick's photo shoots and in those a closer glimpse of both Tunick and the persons who are being photographed can be found. Simply looking at the photos does not reveal the entire story.

Thank you Heather LouAnna for the posting.

Not runway modelling, no... but he has done modelling. I have posed for art classes, too. I understand what is involved, but most people don't. They think you get a model in a bikini, put her on the beach in summer, snap a coupla pix, and you're done. You and I know that bikinis are modelled in winter (and fur coats in summer) in uncomfortable poses for long periods of time. Nothing quick or fun or easy about it.
