My mom sprang the "birds and bees" on me one day when I came home from third grade. She gave me some books with cutesy titles like "Where Did I Come From?" containing equally cutesy cartoon drawings of chubby naked people, and said we'd talk about it later. (I don't recall the subsequent discussion ever happening, btw, probably because what 8-year-old boy really wants to discuss such things with his mom?!?) These books invariably described sex as "a special kind of hug," although I'm not sure they conveyed quite enough about these hugs because for some time after reading them I assumed that people always had sex standing up.
As far as I can recall, my dad has NEVER talked to me about anything sexual, other than awkwardly discouraging me from sharing a bed with my longtime GF/fiancee (now wife) whenever we came home to visit after college. (Mom was cooler about this, telling me quietly, when Dad left the room, where the double-bed sheets could be found.)
Neither of my (suburban, conservative) parents ever talked about masturbation with me -- I'm self-taught there!
