I think it also has to do with trust. If you know a guy is going to let you take your time with his dick,(as apposed to trying to force you down onto the base before you have even started) then you can relax into it.
But saying that I know (not personally, ha) a lot of guys who get a kick out of watching a girl or guys eyes pop out while they are gagging on dick
