internet censorship is very real. in the uk there are offices only about 25 mls from me that i know look into internet traffic. yes originally under the guise of pedophiles and terrorists. yes that old chestnut. but it has gone way further with all isp's having to keep a six month record of all customers internet history. even worse after London bombings now the local council can check your emails and internet use without notice to the police. and like wikileaks the plug can be pulled when convenient to do so. so to the people who think the internet is a open uncensored. where have you been

They're trying to do the same here in the US. I heard a story on NPR yesterday about a new law being proposed that would allow law enforcement officials to access and survey our internet activity. It's only going to get worse...Nanny State Earth here we come...

It's only gonna get worse. In the US the Dems are as bad as the Reps on this, & in the UK we had the Left (Labour) claiming that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear from being constantly intruded upon.

As it turned out of course, (MPs expenses) this did not of course extend to themselves, nor did it give anyone a right to publish their private lives, which were entirely contrary with their public profile.

As has been pointed out here, there are a lot of lobbyist-type tossers, who make their living trying to shift opinions on all kinds of comment receptive sites too, along with the usual shills (let alone the guys who ramp shares on financial sites!)- but I believe that on this & any site, the full spectrum of opinions is always valid.

One can always hide, or create multiple identities IRL - it ain't that hard(! - especially if you do it over a planned period of time!!!!!) - but sometimes it's important to stand up & be counted.

Of course politicians hate open discourse, & the dissemination of information which evades Governmental "D" notices, as do the judiciary - they hate the lack of control.

But it is that very freedom of speech, no matter how objectionable to our own sensibilities, that is the final bastion of free speech, & must be defended to the last.

Edit - my hotmail account got hacked (& I do know some pretty notorious people), & a separate reset address established - I sent 3 emails to hotmail over a month - nothing - i then sent them a mail calling them amongst other things useless motherf*cking c*nts - & they closed it. Go figure - LOL!

They wouldn't even pretend to protect me, but would protect their sensitivities.

The proles hath no idea.

2010is1984.

2010 would only be like 1984 if you naively believed in internet privacy to start with. That's just a common man's assurance that nobody is going to overwhelm you with offers to buy sex toys just because your browser history shows you like to watch porn online... and sadly, that doesn't work too well either.

When it comes to the internet, NOTHING was ever secret or private. You can find sites that can show you what a webpage looked like back in 1996 in less than a few minutes. Everything online is logged and traceable, and any authority figure with probable cause can go to any ISP and obtain the information they want. Yet somehow we can all still come on a site about big dicks and not worry about it becoming a headline on the New York Times. Why is that?

'1984' is a book wherein the government watches and controls everything.

'1984' is a book wherein the government watches and controls everything.

No kidding. I read it in High School.
But your use of its title in reference to this year, as well as your analogous rhetoric regarding the internet is weak. The government has always been watching and in control of "everything" from the very beginning. That's why hundreds of millions of citizens elect people into political office because we want that oversight. And what government doesn't "watch", citizens will do through their obsessive nature to be nosy and rabid paranoia. If you're scared, then go into your bomb shelter, sever your internet connections and hide. The rest of us have lives to live.
