Mathew,
You have expressed my sentiments exactly. My "lay low until elected" theory is just conjecture and hopeful thinking.

Tripod,
You manage to come up with some amazing observations at least once a day. This Scots-Irish concept is very interesting. I will have to think about that. I have been wondering how America could have managed to produce an entire culture of "royalists" out of its roots in revolution. You might have provided the essential ingredient.

On the topic of "The South", have you read American Theocracy, by Kevin Phillips? He has a theory about present day conservatism and The South that has its roots in the loss of the Civil War. I recommend it for that reason and for others.

You rock. Thank you from a frustrated foreigner who's been watching his country's biggest trading partner twirling clockwise down the fiscal and human rights toilet for the last five years.

We're not all a bunch of ignorant redneck greedheads although it sure must seem that way sometimes.

I bought the book and have read a good bit of it. I have heard him interviewed a bunch of times on NPR and have watched his book talk on this very book on C-SPAN. I have also seen him interviewed on the subject of this book by Bill Moyers on PBS. Kevin Phillips is a true conservative, a Reagan Republican and a gentleman of the highest esteem. His theories on the rising power of the South are spot on. In fact his seminal book The Emerging Republican Majority from 1969 details the Scots-Irish theory that I introduced earlier. This book was used as a tool by the Nixon administration to set forth a new dawn for Republicans. The conservatives have since used it as their playbook in their quest for power.

He also wrote an awesome book on the Bush family that is a detailed account into the origins of the Bush Dynasty. How did you know I was a big Kevin Phillips fan? Great taste in books JustAsking!
