I went to my very first dermatology skin check this morning....and was thoroughly disappointed. Was looking for a total body check and the doctor just checked below the waistband at the back very quickly.

I've read other experiences online have been pretty thorough, but mine was not. Wondering if this is just due to the timing with everyone being cautious, or is this normal?

Anyone have any experiences of skin checks - full nudity? I was gowned, but thought I would be naked under the gown. Nope, was told to leave my boxer briefs on.

That's disappointing. Not sure how a dermatologist would be (I've never been) but my last Doc visit was strangely non-invasive. I'm not complaining exactly, but when it's the second time going to get a checkup in several years and they don't stick anything up my butt (or even ask me to undress!) I feel they're not being at all thorough enough. :( Hope your Dr takes their job seriously dude. <3

Sounds like the two skin exams I've had. The first one I wore the gown, but last year I left the gown on the counter and waited in my underwear. Doc never looked at genitals or ass.

I had the same experience years ago. Doc didnt even ask me to undress. I wore shorts.

I took my shirt off but that was it...

I think dermatologists let facts be their guide.

For example, blonde/blue-eyed people of Nordic heritage are at higher risk. Certain types of skin cancers occur only on the face and are self-evident to anyone who is paying the slightest attention. Skin cancers below the waist are uncommon.

And so on.

Yes. My thoughts too.

Male and female also have cancers more commonly in different areas... they are guided by that.

But I agree that in some ways I rather they check you naked and that they should check the scalp.

Last year I had my first dermatology appointment in over 20 years. When shown to the exam room, I was given the option either to leave my underwear on or to remove them under the gown provided. Like you, I expected the doctor to be thorough in examining my body, but I also wanted still to respect the doctor and his professionalism at the conclusion of the exam. So I was a little nervous and not sure what to expect

The doctor first had me shrug out of the sleeves of the gown to expose me from the waist up, and examined my arms, back, chest, torso, etc. as I sat on the table. Then I replaced the gown on my upper body and he asked me to stand before him. The gown opened to the rear and he stooped down to get a close look at my ass. He said, “I’m going to spread your cheeks slightly to see into the crevice just a bit,” following which he did just that. It was all very professionally and gently done. He was not low enough and did not split my cheeks wide enough to see my asshole – just enough to see the skin in the top part of my crack that would otherwise be hidden.

He moved to my front, and kind of bunched up the gown and moved it aside slightly to expose my groin area on either side of my cock, without exposing actually exposing my cock and balls. After this he examined my legs and feet, and asked if there was anything else I felt he should see. In hindsight, I realize that was my cue to mention a mole on my penis or scrotum or the bottom of my ass. But as I have none there, I don’t feel like he missed anything because of my negative reply. Rather, I feel as though he was sufficiently thorough while respecting my privacy and modesty.

Personally, I would not have complained had he flipped up the front of the gown and held my dick and balls while examining them. But had he taken this approach, he might not have gained the same level of professional respect from me. One must also consider that many men would be uncomfortable with so “invasive” an examination, and he had no way to know how I would react. Overall I was pleased with the experience and look forward to seeing him again in two or three years (per his recommendation).

I went to an older guy a few times for an annual check and he was not thorough at all. He had me just take off my shirt, not shorts or socks. Not impressed.

So, I switched to a younger new guy in town. He was very thorough, and I was told to take everything off buy my boxers and get in a gown. He had me lie back on the table and pulled the gown down in front to check my chest. Then, he quickly grabbed the waistband of my boxers and pulled them away to look underneath. I was a bit startled and maybe jumped. Next time I will be ready and more relaxed. Later he had me stand up and pull my boxers down so he could check my butt.

My advice if you think your dermatologist is not being thorough is to go elsewhere.

I go to the dermatologist annually. I went to a new doc last time. I stayed in my boxer briefs for most of the exam. While asking questions as he examined me he asked if I spent any time in the sun naked. I said, “Yes. Occasionally at the beach and around the pool.” He asked me to pull down my boxer briefs and he checked my ass and up front. I’m not sure if he would have checked those areas if I had answered “no.”

On another note, he was cute so I didn’t mind showing him my junk.

I had to have a pre-melanoma removed last fall and had to go back for a 6 month check. When I went in for the suspicious spot to be biopsied, the doctor did a full body check, but he just had me pull up my underwear like I had a wedgie. When I returned for the 6 month check, he had me pull down my underwear and inspected everything. He didn't spend a lot of time, but just did a look and had me lift up my dick so he could see the underside to make sure there was nothing there. He even went so far to inspect between my toes. Although I'm olive skinned and don't burn, I found a mysterious mole that appeared suddenly last summer. I spent a lot of time outside shirtless last summer and got scared when I saw the spot. The doctor gave me a huge lecture about being out in the sun and he had to cut out a big area (about 2" x2") to make sure he got the whole spot. It returned from pathology showing that it contained the type of cells that turn into melanoma. So I'm being careful this summer because I don't want to have melanoma. I can assure you that there was nothing sexual about stripping down for a dermatologist and his nurses.

A good doctor will check everything. You can develop cancer on parts that don't typically see the sun.

Only two skin checks I've had were properly thorough, my former GP and my new dermatologist, both ladies. Both had me totally nude and looked over everything.

I can't trust a doctor who is afraid to examine his/her patient thoroughly. Happy with my derm, still shopping for a new GP and urologist.

I would certainly have a dermatologist check you out if you're in the sun a lot or like me are light skinned.
I have a tendancy to develop keratosis, and although I've had them sucessfully removed, there's one that keeps coming back.
I'll probably have the Mohs (?) done on that one spot, we'll see what the doc says. And don't forget to use sunscreen!!

I agree with you that being naked and examined is about as far as you can get from sexual

Last skin check I had was last year. The woman dermatologist I see checks everything. I’m told by the nurse to take off everything but my underwear and put the gown on. When the doctor comes in I just take the gown off and I’m in just my briefs for the whole exam. The dermatologist I see actually prefers guys wear briefs for the exam that way more skin is exposed. At the end of the exam she’ll pull my briefs down to have a look at the skin behind them. She’ll grab my penis and hold it up to look at the bottom side of it and same for my balls.

My medical history is very similar to @prepstudinsc (Mediterranean coloration, but had a stage 0 melanoma), and my regular dermatology appointments are similar to his and @smoothbodguy: thorough and respectful, with underwear and gown moved as needed.

Been going to the same dermatologist for maybe 10 years. Shirt, shoes, and socks came off. I left on my short. To me, I got a full body check - face, scalp, chest, back, legs, and feet.

Last year when I had my check-up, I asked the Doc to look at a very small growth (wart-like) on the penis shaft. I forget what he termed it but applied to liquid nitrogen which cured it in about a week.
