In my opinion, Desperate Housewives is by far the best dramedy series on TV at the moment and beats it predecessor-in-mind, Sex and the City, by lengths.
Sex and the City represented a fantasy world very losely anchored in reality, whereas the strongly overdrawn characters of Desperate Housewives have carbon copies of them appearing in many neighborhoods. I'd roughly estimate that there must be a large number of women who can sympathize especially with the characters of Susan Mayer and Lynette Scavo, who are the most universal types of the character cast (the single-raising mother-in-distress and the chronically overburdened mother). Recent surveys bach that up as they show that the character of Susan comes up as the most popular of the DHs, followed closely by the great-looking trophy wife Gabrielle.
Another factor that contributes to the popularity of the series is the perfect mixture of comedy and mystery/crime. My l/f said the series reminds her a lot, plot-wise, of the kind of movies the french director/author Claude Chabrol made.
Sorry for sounding like a high school essay on "What's your favorite TV show",
