I use them interchangeably but I see your point. I’ll show my age by saying that dick for me will always be Tricky Dick. If that doesn’t mean anything to you Google it. Lol
I would say cock is my preferred term.
Great question by the way!!

I say dick never liked the word cock it sounds so abrasive. It’s similar to how people don’t like the word cunt ironically I have no problem with cunt.

I’ve seen someone point it out and not saying there’s a direct correlation but I have noticed it a bit, but white people tend to use that while other ethnicities more specifically black people tend to say dick.

Dick is best.

Back in early college years I was surrounded by a number of males from other parts of the US that used the term “cock” to reference “pussy”. I had never heard that term used that way, so learned not to trust its use. Since then I have been uneasy with the term and have mentally attached an abrasive feeling to the use of “cock”.

In my part of the world a reference to “Buford” or “old Buford” or “Willie” would be quickly understood to refer to a “dick” and would extend to capture the independent nature and behavior that a dick can often show.

A dick by any other name is still a dick, unless you call it a penis. Call it a penis and it just gets soft and loses interest.
