Once I heard it explained that "dick" refers to an underdeveloped penis on a young boy or an adolescent, whereas "cock" refers to a fully developed, long, thick, juicy penis on an adult male stud.

That's essentially what my gf said too when asked the same question by me at some point. She's indifferent to dicks, but she LOoOooOves cock!
I personally get turned on by the word, as did an ex gf of mine.

To "cock" your weapon is to prepare it for firing. Sounds like a hard penis to me. Seems when I was younger, I refered to my penis as a "peter". In more recent years I call it a penis. A slur or slang, "Suck my dick you cocksucker"

I've found that different groups tend to use one or the other preferentially when referring to the penis, but that there is no consistent extra meaning. On the other hand, when used to refer to a person, dick has a derogatory meaning.

TO ME DICK, PRICK, WEINER, PETER, AND DINK ALL HAVE A MORE NEGATIVE CONNOTATION-- PENIS AND COCK ARE MORE REFINED AND I`M NOT REFERING TO ROOSTERS OR WHAT YOU DO WITH A REVOLVER (ALTHO COCKED GUNS AND COCKS CAN BOTH BE DANGEROUS WHEN POINTED!!)

I usually use the word dick in conjunction with another word for something derogatory, like calling someone a dickwad. Now cock on the other hand is pure sex for me. Can't get enough of it.

Just for the international touch in Italian we have:

Cazzo: vulgar, and used also as "damn!"
Uccello: popular in the north
Pesce: used in the south
Minchia: from Sicily
Manego: from Veneto
Palo: emphasizes the size

I think that cock has become the more masculine term for penis. Cock has probably also became a term for a larger penis. Saying dick is not necessarily a sexual term but cock has a sexual connotation to it.
