Since I never knew my father (he died suddenly at a fairly young age when I was less than a year old) I can't give an answer about him.

As to my mother, yes I would have chosen her and would choose her again. She did an excellent job raising me as a widowed mother and gave me great support, guidance, love and discipline molding me into the man I am now.

One could say that those are the parents you chose to make you the person you are.

Or one could say those are the parents that God chose for you, to make you the person you are.

Neither. Nature vs. Nurture. Studies show that peers actually mould people more than their parents do.

There is a concept in Buddhism that implies that you chose your parents before you were born, because they are who you needed to learn from.
(I don't know the exact concept, I just heard it before)

Does this apply to you?

In my case it does.

Yes, I chose my parents. LMAO !!!

Yes, I believe that we choose our parents.

James Hillman's The Soul's Code expands on this idea.

And I like your questions, Mem. It's good to have unusual and unexpected topics popping up.

I think this is true, unfortunately. I would've been better off if my parents molded me more than my peers did, since I grew up in a community where almost all my peers treated me like dirt.

I don't really know if I would've chosen the parents I have or not. I think they did fine with what they had. Both of my parents had health problems from a young age, though, and in their case it was truly "they were doing the best they could". I had to be caregiver to my mom when she was near death, and I was only 8 years old at the time, plus I really do NOT have a "nurturing" personality, and never have had. I would've been better able to handle the situation if I'd been older when it happened, though. The other thing about my parents is that they kept to themselves, so I was not around other kids at all until I got into school. (I'm an only child, too.)

I may have chosen my parents, but I would've definitely chosen a different hometown to grow up in!!!!!

That's truly nonsensical. Buddhism has a lot of things going for it but this is not one of them.

Too many things happen between conception and birth that can have a huge impact on the child. Few people would choose to be born into poverty in Africa and few people would choose to be born to a crack addicted whore. Unfortunately, many people are.

I am a Buddhist, but I have never heard of a spirit or a person can choose its own parents. In the real Buddhism, a person's destiny or fate is manipulated by Karma or his past actions. If you are mean and stingy in this life, you will be born to a poor family in your next life. If you kill animals or any living creature, your life span will be short in your next life. It's all about Karma my friends !!!

But that is how you choose them, if you choose to live a good and kind life you will have good parents in the next. (or they will be chosen for you)

Yes. It all depends on you. Your future Karma depends on your current actions. So be a good boy !!!

I am very sorry for what I did, and I regret about it. I promise that I won't start an inflammatory thread again.

I think it was a decent match-up, despite the divorce. I learned enough and am close with my mother and grandmother. Not so much with my father (in fact, not at all) but I did learn from him.

Yes, I do believe it was a matter of choice. Mind you, I knew the essentials of who they were...their immediate difficulties with life... and it is my belief that I was additionally informed that there would be many struggles and hurdles within the life presented to the lifeform I was about to inhabit. Beyond that though, no pre-summary was given as to how my life would evolve.

To me, all of life is an experience and just as there are sad moments there are happy moments and it is my goal to enjoy and embrace all the feelings provided towards me from both of these and the many many other feelings which exist.
