As of today, when Japan's new liberal democrat government took over, it became apparent that the newly appointed Justice Minister, who has a twenty-plus year record of calling for the abolition of the death penalty and will not be signing off on the execution orders of the 100 prisoners on death row, there is but one, only one, industrialized nation in the world that still executes its prisoners...

Care to take a guess what country that is?

Since Iran has yet to leave the Dark Ages, you must have been referring to the Republic of Texas, known for its assembly-line judicial death operations.

    What do I win?

I do credit Iran for dissipating any residual doubt as to the efficacy of the death penalty as a crime deterrent.

The man who was being whipped in public moments before his (equally public) hanging had, the photo caption soberly described, raped and killed a mind-boggling number of children.

How could such unfathomable crimes still happen under such a predictably harsh, medieval justice system?

Getting back to the topic of the first post, good for Japan. I also know a number states have outlawed the death penalty in this country, but due to the culture in some parts of the US, I doubt it will ever fully be eliminated.

There's only one problem with the death penalty: Very occasionally, the person we execute is innocent.

But that's kind of a big problem.

You would think that this horrible possibility, however slight, would be enough to make every sane person say, "Well, that's just unacceptable. As much as I have a hardon for killing bad guys, we just can't take the risk."

But that underestimates the desire -- rather, the need -- for revenge on the part of those who lose a loved one to violence. When outsiders take one of our tribe, hundreds of thousands of years of animal instincts tell us to hunt them down and kill them. The few hundred years' history of our criminal justice system is no match for that instinct.

Since the US no longer produces manufactured goods the rest of the world desires, it cannot be America. I'll guess India; don't they own Jaguar now...
